Description
Katsuya Kimura is a central student character in the class 5-3 at Dōmori Elementary School. He initially presents a tough exterior and engages in antisocial behavior, skipping classes, smoking, and even stealing charity donations, which leads to him being treated as an outcast in his class. This behavior stems from a combination of cowardice, feelings of inadequacy, and peer misunderstandings, but beneath his hardened demeanor lies deep guilt and remorse over his actions. He is not fundamentally malicious and possesses a strong capacity for self-reflection and a sincere desire to correct his flaws.

Despite his delinquent start, Katsuya is guided by his supernatural-sensing teacher, Meisuke Nueno, whose patience and teachings help him confront his weaknesses. Alongside support from his classmates, this influence is the catalyst for his significant personal evolution, transforming him from a troublemaker into a reliable and responsible member of the group who can be counted on during supernatural conflicts. While he matures, he retains traces of his mischievous and sometimes immature nature. His core motivation throughout the series is a deep-seated desire to protect others, a drive that becomes his defining characteristic.

Katsuya's infatuation with his classmate, Miki Hosokawa, is a primary driver of his actions and a recurring theme in the story. He idolizes her and often endures her teasing or manipulation, sometimes being treated like a slave due to his obvious crush. This relationship has its ups and downs; they briefly date for one month during high school before parting, though Katsuya continues to harbor feelings for her and consistently risks himself to protect her from spiritual dangers even after their breakup. He shares a close friendship with Hiroshi Tateno and is a member of the "Less Than 30 Points Great Trio," alongside Hiroshi and Makoto Kurita, a nod to his poor academic performance in most subjects. At home, he lives with his working parents in public housing and reveals a devoted and protective side as an older brother to his younger sister, Manami.

Physically, Katsuya stands 156 cm tall and weighs 46 kg, with black hair and eyes, and he is often depicted wearing a cap. His hairstyle shifts from long to short as he ages. While his academic skills are lacking, especially in non-physical subjects, he shines in physical education and home economics, showcasing a notable talent for cooking. He also boasts strong athletic abilities and enjoys fishing. In the sequel, Jigoku Sensei Nube Neo, his journey continues into adulthood where he faces setbacks such as failing university entrance exams and the heartbreak of his split with Miki. He perseveres and enrolls as a third-year student at the National Defense Academy, aiming to become an officer in the Self-Defense Force, a path that underscores his enduring resolve to protect others.
