Description
Shirayuki Hotogi, born Himiko, hails from the Hotogi family shrine maidens in secluded Aomori. As the eldest of six daughters, including half-sister Konayuki Hotogi, she endured rigorous combat training through daily ambushes by her sisters wielding live weapons. This forged her into the family's prized daughter, yet her sheltered existence bred profound loneliness. This isolation ended when Kinji Tohyama visited the shrine, introducing her to the outside world and sparking her deep devotion and romantic feelings. They later reunited as students at Tokyo Butei High School.

At Butei High, Shirayuki holds leadership roles as student council chairperson and president of the gardening, handicraft, and girls' volleyball clubs. An A-rank Butei in the SSR department specializing in paranormal investigations, she excels academically with consistent exam scores in the nineties. Her unwavering dedication manifests in a regimented routine preparing meals for Kinji and cleaning his dorm. Shaped by her shrine maiden upbringing, she typically exhibits a calm, reserved demeanor embodying the Yamato Nadeshiko ideal. However, this masks intense jealousy; witnessing other girls approach Kinji triggers violent outbursts, such as attacking Aria Kanzaki while calling her a "thieving cat" and leaving a dagger-pierced threat in her locker after discovering Aria lived with Kinji.

Her signature weapon is the Irokane Ayame, a Japanese sword capable of blocking bullets and cleaving train cars. As a Chōtei (psychic Butei), she wields flame-based Hotogi Heavenly Arts, including pyrokinesis and healing Kidoujutsu. Her hair ribbon seals her full power; its removal unleashes her true capabilities, altering her personality to become assertive and combat-focused, revealing her epithet "Scarlet Miko" and ancestral title "Himiko" (Flame Priestess), tied to engulfing her sword in destructive flames.

Beyond Kinji, she views Aria Kanzaki and Riko Mine as romantic rivals, engaging in escalating competitions with Riko blending combat and absurd challenges. Protective bonds connect her to her sisters, especially Konayuki, rooted in their shared upbringing. Shirayuki battles an inferiority complex, believing others value her only for her status and her sacrifice would go unmourned. This contrasts with perverse tendencies like wearing erotic lingerie and strategizing seduction attempts toward Kinji, including a staged nude encounter in a sabotaged nurse's office.

Her character development shows her gradually defying family restrictions to protect Kinji, exemplified by attending a forbidden fireworks festival. Her resolve crystallizes in later arcs, declaring her ancestral duty as a "protective Miko" who burns away threats to those she safeguards, regardless of the adversary.
