OVA
Description
Yūsuke Kitagawa is a second-year art student at Kōsei High School in Tokyo. Orphaned young, he was raised by the renowned artist Ichiryūsai Madarame, who became both his mentor and sole guardian. Yusuke developed immense admiration for Madarame, deeply inspired by the painting "Sayuri," which he believed Madarame created. Unaware for years, Madarame exploited Yusuke and other students, claiming their artwork as his own while subjecting them to financial and emotional manipulation. Yusuke endured harsh conditions—including food deprivation and isolation—while rationalizing them as necessary sacrifices for art, demonstrating early signs of Stockholm syndrome. This dynamic persisted until the Phantom Thieves revealed Madarame’s plagiarism and abuse. The revelation intensified when Yusuke learned Madarame allowed his mother to die during a seizure to steal "Sayuri," her final masterpiece.

Yusuke defines himself through artistic obsession and social eccentricity. He perceives the world aesthetically, constantly describing people, objects, or scenarios in terms of beauty and composition. This leads to unconventional behavior, such as impulsively purchasing lobsters for their visual appeal despite financial strain or bluntly requesting Ann Takamaki to model nude for his art. Peers frequently describe him as operating on a "different wavelength," displaying haughtiness toward actions he deems unaesthetic but also naïveté about social norms due to Madarame’s sheltered upbringing. Despite his aloofness, he exhibits analytical thinking during Phantom Thieves operations, methodically evaluating risks and outcomes. He holds deep principles regarding art’s purpose, rejecting commercialism in favor of capturing "the essence of the human heart," a conviction fueling his internal conflict after Madarame’s exposure.

His development centers on overcoming trauma and artistic stagnation. After witnessing Madarame’s Shadow admit to exploitation in the Metaverse, Yusuke awakens his Persona, Goemon, and joins the Phantom Thieves under the codename Fox. Though he helps change Madarame’s heart, he grapples with residual loyalty, wishing for his mentor’s redemption. In the "Proof of Justice" OVA, set after Goro Akechi’s death, Yusuke supports the group’s investigation into new injustices, showcasing his role as a tactical and moral anchor. During Takuto Maruki’s reality-altering intervention, Yusuke’s ideal world depicts Madarame as a repentant teacher exhibiting "Sayuri" under his mother’s name—a manifestation of his unresolved yearning for familial atonement. Later, in spin-offs like *Persona 5 Strikers*, he confronts art critic Ango Natsume with artistic conviction and emotional clarity, indicating matured self-assurance. His Confidant storyline involves battling artist’s block by seeking diverse human experiences, ultimately concluding that art should "purify, help, and save others."

Interactions with other characters highlight his growth. His friendship with Joker (Ren Amamiya) involves mutual artistic exploration, including life-drawing sessions solidifying their trust. He clashes with Ryuji Sakamoto over propriety but develops camaraderie through shared missions. With Futaba Sakura, he transitions from arguments over altered figurines to protective mentorship, earning the nickname "Inari" for his fox-like persona. He demonstrates unexpected compassion, advocating for classmate Naoya Makigami’s family issues or donating blood as a "hobby." Financially impractical, he relies on the Thieves for support, symbolizing his ongoing journey toward interdependence.

Visually, Yusuke is tall and slender with dark blue hair covering one eye. His school attire defies regulations: a white gakuran shirt with fleur-de-lis embroidery in winter and an ultramarine button-down in summer. His Phantom Thief outfit features a kitsune mask, a black jumpsuit with a fox tail, and blue gloves, embodying Inari, the Japanese fox deity. This design extends to spin-offs; *Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight* adds a spiked blazer and metallic sneakers, while *Strikers* introduces an indigo hoodie and festival yukata.

Functionally, he serves as the Phantom Thieves’ strategist and artist, designing their logo and calling cards. His Persona evolves from Goemon, based on the outlaw Ishikawa Goemon, to Kamu Susano-o, a storm deity, and Gorokichi, a glam-rock incarnation in *Royal*. In combat, he wields katanas and assault rifles, specializing in ice magic and physical attacks. His Confidant ability allows replication of Skill Cards, reflecting his artistic duplication skills.
