Description
Ichika Kishimojin is a prominent character from the manga Black Torch, serving as a skilled agent of the Public Bureau of Espionage. She is a member of Division 2 and works directly under her superior, Ryosuke Shiba, as part of the special unit known as Black Torch. She is the only daughter and heir of the famous Kishimojin clan, a lineage of onmitsu, or spies, with an unusual family structure. Her upbringing is marked by the traditions of this extremely matriarchal family, where the presence of men is heavily restricted within their mansion grounds. Driven since the age of five to become a great spy, Ichika has devoted her life to rigorous training to succeed in her family’s legacy.
Ichika is defined by a strong and proud personality, taking her duties with the utmost seriousness. She has a deep-seated hatred for being underestimated, particularly by men, and holds a fierce animosity toward mononoke, the supernatural entities that threaten humans. This resentment is intensely personal: when she was young, her mother was petrified and turned to stone by a powerful mononoke. This event became the core of her motivation, leading her to vow revenge against the creature responsible while also harboring a quiet hope to find a way to save her mother. In her role as an agent, Ichika is the most experienced member of the field team. Initially cold and dismissive toward Jiro Azuma, the protagonist who becomes fused with a mononoke named Rago, she views him as a monster no different from the creatures she fights. She roughly apprehends him upon their first meeting and makes her disdain clear, stating she will do her job no matter what she is told to protect.
Her role in the story evolves through her forced partnership with Jiro and Rago. A turning point occurs when their transport is attacked by enemy mononoke. Unable to defeat them alone, she is forced to release Jiro from his restraints after he appeals to her professionalism, arguing that using all available resources is the most effective way to complete the mission. Following the battle, Jiro’s pragmatic statement that they owe each other nothing—she fought to protect them and they chose to help—begins to thaw her cold attitude. She asks him to call her by name, and their relationship shifts from antagonistic to a more cooperative and friendly bond. This professional respect extends to other teammates as well, though she can become flustered by unexpected comments, such as when the new recruit Reiji Kirihara calls her beautiful.
Ichika possesses considerable combat prowess, specializing in hand-to-hand combat and fighting with a tanto, a short blade she carries at her waist. She also carries a pistol for ranged combat. Her physical abilities are considerable, allowing her to dent the wall of a truck with a punch and move faster than the eye can see. Her most notable ability is a hereditary trait known as Flameblood, which is passed down through the female members of the Kishimojin clan. By igniting her own blood as it flows within her body, Ichika can achieve bursts of inhuman speed and power. She can also cause her spilled blood to burn with a fire that only extinguishes when she wills it. This power is a double-edged sword, however, as it exacts a heavy physical toll on the user, which is why her parents originally did not want her to become an onmitsu. Determined to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become strong enough to face her mother’s killer, Ichika eventually begins training to master this dangerous talent. She also demonstrates a strong mental fortitude, being the first to overcome a training exercise that used illusions to trap subjects in their own traumatic memories, declaring that such tricks would not work on her.
