Description
Hana Usami is a character from the anime Black Torch, serving as a subordinate to Ryosuke Shiba within the Bureau of Espionage and acting as a backup member of the Black Torch squad. Her background is rooted in a deep-seated desire to be a hero of justice, a dream she developed by idolizing her parents, both of whom were police officers. This ambition drove her to be a serious and studious student, earning excellent grades throughout her schooling. She also dedicated herself to the practice of judo from elementary school through college, consistently placing in the top ranks at tournaments, though she struggled with pressure and could never secure the top spot.
Upon graduating from college, Hana achieved her goal by joining the police force and was assigned to the Security Bureau of the Metropolitan Police Department, where she worked as a Security Police officer providing bodyguard services for domestic and foreign VIPs. Her professional skill, combined with her pleasant and honest personality, made her a highly valued employee. Her career path soon led her to be scouted by the Bureau of Espionage, and she quickly passed her training to become an official onmitsu. However, a critical incident during a mission to apprehend a dangerous criminal changed the course of her career. When the target resisted and drew a hidden weapon, the order shifted from capture to kill, but Hana found herself unable to pull the trigger. Another agent eliminated the target instead. Because she was capable of protecting someone but could not muster the same effort to take a life, the Bureau deemed her incompatible with field missions and reassigned her to a desk job in Division 2. Her primary motivation is rooted in the ideal of justice she has held since childhood, though her experience reveals a personal limitation when that ideal confronts the necessity of lethal force in the line of duty. This incident defines her early role in the story, situating her as a capable agent whose moral compass conflicts with the demands of her organization.
Hana Usami has notable physical characteristics, including purple eyes and purple hair cut to shoulder length. Her key relationship is with Ryosuke Shiba, as she is his direct subordinate within the Bureau. Her development as a character centers on the tension between her proven abilities in protection and combat—honed through years of judo training and experience as an SP—and her psychological inability to perform a killing act, an event that led to her banishment from fieldwork. In terms of notable abilities, Hana is a highly skilled judo practitioner, having trained from elementary school through college and consistently placed highly in tournaments. Her training and experience as a Security Police officer and an onmitsu for the Bureau of Espionage further demonstrate her physical competence and skill in protective operations.
