Description
Jiro Azuma is the central character of the manga Black Torch, a seventeen-year-old who lives with his grandfather and is the latest in a long line of ninja. Jiro possesses the unique and innate ability to communicate with animals, a gift that defines much of his compassionate nature and draws him into extraordinary circumstances. Despite his rough and tumble appearance, which often makes him look like a typical punk or delinquent, his core personality is defined by a pure heart, a strong sense of justice, and a deep-seated kindness, particularly toward helpless creatures. This compassionate instinct leads him to nurse an injured black cat back to health, an act of goodwill that irrevocably changes his life. The cat is revealed to be Rago, a powerful immortal mononoke, or spirit. When other mononoke attack Rago to claim his power, Jiro intervenes and is fatally wounded. In a moment of debt and pity, Rago chooses to fuse his being with Jiro’s, sacrificing his own independent form to bring the boy back to life. This fusion creates a being known as a Black Torch, and the two very different personalities are now forced to share a single body.
Jiro’s personality is a mix of contrasting traits. He is famously reckless and hot-headed, often acting before he thinks, which his own grandfather critcizes. He is prone to getting into fights and has a punkish exterior that belies his true nature. However, this fiery demeanor is balanced by an unshakeable moral compass and loyalty to those he cares about. His relationship with Rago is the heart of the story; the two bicker constantly like an old married couple, but they develop a deep, unspoken bond and an effective partnership in battle. Following the fusion, Jiro is recruited into a secret government organization known as the Bureau of Espionage, specifically its Special Operations Division 2 led by Ryosuke Shiba. Initially unsure about joining, Jiro accepts his new role as an operative to fight against dangerous mononoke, using his newfound power to protect others. His key relationships within the bureau are initially fraught with tension: he must prove himself to his new comrades, particularly the skilled female ninja Ichika Kishimojin, who harbors a deep distrust of mononoke and therefore of Jiro, and the rival operative Reiji Kirihara, who takes an instant disliking to him.
As a character, Jiro undergoes a significant, though tragically truncated, development. The manga was cut short and concluded in only five volumes, meaning his full potential arc was cut off before it could fully mature. Despite this, his journey focuses on mastering the volatile power he now shares with Rago and accepting his new identity as something no longer fully human. He trains to awaken and control Rago’s abilities, transitioning from a powerful but inexperienced brawler into a more focused combatant capable of facing enormous threats. His motivations are straightforward: to protect his loved ones, including his grandfather, his new allies, and the animals he cares for, by harnessing the curse and gift of being fused with a mononoke. His ultimate fight is against a great mononoke named Amagi, forcing him to fully confront the responsibilities and consequences of his power.
In terms of abilities, Jiro is a formidable combatant even before his fusion with Rago. He is an expert in hand-to-hand combat, having been rigorously trained by his ninja grandfather. He also possesses a unique stealth ability granted by a special "gear" that can make him invisible. After merging with Rago, his powers increase dramatically. He gains superhuman physical characteristics, including enhanced speed, strength, and durability. He can use energy manipulation to fire powerful projectiles, has a potent regenerative healing factor, and can even achieve true flight. Rago also acts as a sort of automatic barrier for Jiro, protecting him from harm and able to destroy enemy barriers. In a state of rage, Jiro can access an even higher level of power, becoming a city-level threat. He also retains his original ability to communicate with and command animals, a skill that, while not combative in a flashy way, is a fundamental part of who he is. However, all this power comes with the risk of losing control, as his reckless nature and hot-headedness are known weaknesses.
