Description
Hiyori Haijima is a student in Class 1-Otsu at Miden Academy, a school dedicated to training a new generation of exorcists who combat digital ghosts known as Bake-aka. She was forced to enroll by her father, who disapproved of her intense passion for video games. Physically, Hiyori is a teenage girl with pink hair that reaches her chest and blue eyes, often depicted wearing glasses with an outfit that includes boots and a belt.

Hiyori's personality is defined by a profound internal conflict between her true nature and her public persona. In her daily life, she is an extreme recluse, being pathologically shy, socially anxious, and reclusive to the point of rarely leaving her living space. She speaks very quietly and is known for her introverted demeanor. However, this is contrasted by the personality she adopts when operating the official Miden Academy mascot, a doll named Denmi-chan. While possessing and controlling this doll, Hiyori becomes wildly energetic, outgoing, and hyperactive, displaying a showy personality similar to a virtual YouTuber. This performance through the doll allows her to interact with others and participate in public life, effectively hiding her anxious true self behind a digital persona.

Despite her social anxieties, Hiyori is a highly skilled close-combat specialist. Her combat prowess is directly linked to her background as a top-tier fighting game player; her strategies and techniques are informed by her digital experience, allowing her to "lay the smackdown" effectively even through her remote-controlled doll. Her primary ability involves possessing inanimate objects, most notably the Denmi-chan doll, which she uses as her physical proxy. This power is highly advantageous, as it allows her to engage in dangerous exorcism battles from the absolute safety of her own room, never needing to put her physical body in harm's way. When she requires more power, she is also capable of possessing larger and more formidable dolls. Hiyori can also be a capable instructor; for instance, she has provided martial arts training to the protagonist, Soji Enishiro, to help him improve his physical strength.

Within the story, Hiyori serves as a supporting member of the main cast of students. Her most notable relationship is with her classmate Renri Hasumi, who serves as an emotional support and is often the first to notice when Hiyori is feeling unstable or anxious. Using her keen insight, classmate Kiyomi Urusugawa has also shown an early awareness of the secrets behind Hiyori's unique abilities. Hiyori is noted as one of the few genuinely kind and nice people within a cast of characters who are often described as being unpleasant or nasty. Her development centers on the contrast between her isolated, shy self and the confident, energetic persona she creates. Through her role as Denmi-chan, she is able to contribute to her team and form connections with others, proving that offensive strength in this universe does not strictly require a nasty personality, as she is able to be powerful while remaining fundamentally kind.
