Description
Keiji Kiriya is the protagonist of the original story, though the anime film adaptation reimagines him as a secondary character. In the source material, he begins as a young, inexperienced private in the United Defense Force, fresh out of high school and with only six months of training before his first deployment. He is assigned to the 17th Company, 3rd Battalion, 12th Regiment of the 301st Armored Infantry Division, equipped with a Jacket, which is a powered exosuit used in combat against the Mimics, the alien force attempting to terraform Earth. The anime film version departs from this, portraying Keiji not as a soldier but as an anxious and lighthearted engineer or programmer, one of two researchers investigating an alien structure, with no combat training whatsoever.
His personality is defined by his initial lack of confidence and heroism. When first thrust into battle, he is a green and uncertain recruit, whose natural instinct is to run away from danger. Upon realizing he is caught in a time loop that resets every time he dies, his early reactions are those of desperation and despair, including attempting to desert and even contemplating suicide. However, as he resigns himself to his fate, a more methodical and determined side emerges. He begins to meticulously analyze each loop, learning from every death and treating the repeating days as an opportunity for intensive personal training. Over the course of more than a hundred and sixty loops, he transforms, becoming a focused and highly capable soldier who, while still prone to recklessness, never surrenders to hopelessness.
Keijis primary motivation is straightforward survival. His immediate goal is to escape the time loop, which he learns requires him to survive the battle and fully defeat the Mimic forces. This need to survive is the engine that drives his transformation from a frightened novice into a seasoned warrior. There is no overarching desire for glory or heroism; his purpose is intensely personal, focused on reaching a tomorrow he has not yet lived.
Within the narrative, Keiji serves as the reader's perspective through the terrifying and disorienting world of the time loop. His role is that of the unlikely hero who earns his skills through relentless repetition and failure. The anime film, however, shifts this focus entirely, placing Rita as the main protagonist and relegating Keiji to a supporting role as her second, with their dynamic forming a core part of the story.
His most significant relationship is with Rita Vrataski, the legendary Full Metal Bitch, a soldier famous for her prowess in killing Mimics. Their bond is unusual, shaped by the mechanics of the time loop. Because Rita does not retain her memories across resets, Keiji is forced to learn her patterns, fighting style, and personality anew in each iteration. This creates a deep, one-sided familiarity where Keiji comes to know her intimately while she experiences him as a stranger each time. Through repeated interactions, he is able to earn her trust and form a critical partnership, and she becomes the center of his world within the loop. After their eventual meeting, they develop a bond that is both a tactical alliance and a deeply personal connection, with Rita acting as a mentor and, ultimately, a mirror to his own journey.
Throughout the story, Keiji undergoes a profound character development. He evolves from a helpless and cowardly recruit into what can be described as a natural-born killer, though his abilities are the result of an unnatural and grueling process. He learns an old samurai principle, kiri oboeru, which means to strike down your enemy and learn, a philosophy that becomes the core of his existence. He becomes so adept that he can process combat in slow motion, reading an opponent's movements as a series of frames and predicting their actions with perfect accuracy. By the end, he is a force of nature on the battlefield, capable of single-handedly destroying hordes of Mimics.
Notably, Keiji develops several key abilities, many of which are tied to the Jacket exosuit. The most defining is his time reversal power. He does not control it consciously; rather, his brain is altered by exposure to Mimic tachyon particles, effectively turning him into an antenna that rewinds time by approximately thirty hours each time he is killed. Within the loop, he hones his combat skills to a superhuman degree. While wearing his Jacket, he achieves wall-level attack potency and durability, and supersonic speeds, allowing him to easily kill Mimics. He becomes a master of weaponry, specializing in a massive tungsten carbide battle axe, a pile driver that fires explosive tungsten spikes, and other heavy firearms. His most notable talent is an analytical prediction ability, which allows him to break down a second into ten frames and perfectly anticipate and dodge any attack. Through sheer repetition, he also gains the ability to power mimicry, perfectly copying Rita's unique battle style and techniques.
