Description
Mirei Suzuki is a supporting character in Sound! Euphonium: The Final Movie Part 1, where she appears as a second-year student at Kitauji High School and a member of the school’s concert band. She plays the tuba in the low brass section. Mirei is tall with fair skin, short black hair that parts on the left, and blue eyes. She is often called by the nickname Micchan, though she personally dislikes this nickname.
Mirei began playing the tuba in her first year of middle school. She had originally wanted to play the trumpet, but due to her height she was assigned to the tuba instead. Although she was not initially enthusiastic about the instrument, spending three years in the top concert band at her middle school made her proud of her abilities. She enters Kitauji already a highly skilled player, with a technique that surpasses even some of the upperclassmen when she first joins the club.
Her personality is reserved and serious. She takes everything she does very seriously, often asking detailed questions of her seniors and writing down everything in a notebook. She has a cool, somewhat distant demeanor and does not readily show her emotions. Despite her technical proficiency, she tends to push others away and struggles to integrate smoothly into the social environment of the band. This aloofness is partially rooted in her sensitivity about fitting in; she works hard to earn her place and prove herself, but her blunt or dismissive remarks can create distance between her and her peers.
Mirei is motivated by a strong drive to improve as a musician and to secure a position in the competition ensemble. She is competitive and responds strongly to the meritocratic atmosphere of the band, showing a particular sensitivity about auditions and evaluations.
Her key relationship within the band is with Satsuki Suzuki, a fellow first-year (later second-year) tuba player. Although they share the same surname, they are not related. They were friends in elementary school, where they were known together as Sacchan and Micchan, a pairing Mirei dislikes. Mirei and Satsuki have contrasting personalities: while Mirei is cool and reserved, Satsuki is warm and sociable. Their dynamic provides a notable contrast within the tuba section.
As part of the new generation of members, Mirei represents the ongoing influx of talent into Kitauji’s concert band. Her presence adds depth to the low brass section and highlights the continuous cycle of competitive pressure and personal growth that defines the ensemble. Throughout the events of The Final Movie Part 1, Mirei’s development involves learning to connect with others and becoming more comfortable within the group, moving beyond her initial isolation while maintaining her serious dedication to her instrument and to the band’s collective goal.
