Description
Meili Portroute is a young girl who plays a significant role in the later arcs of the story. Physically, she is approximately twelve years old, with beautiful deep blue hair often styled into two long braids and green eyes. To blend in with the children of Arlam Village, she initially wears a light blue dress, but her attire during her work as an assassin mirrors that of her companion, Elsa Granhiert, consisting of a dark blue dress with a white blouse and a moon-shaped brooch.

On the surface, Meili presents herself as a shy, meek, and somewhat reserved child who loves playing with small animals. However, her true personality is that of a cold and whimsical assassin, a product of her traumatic upbringing. She speaks with a drawn-out, relaxed tone and her moods can shift quickly and unpredictably. Despite her lethal nature, she retains childlike qualities, such as a deep love for stuffed animals, which she uses to put on little plays, and a strong dislike for green peppers and having her hair messed up. At her core, she is an empty and lost individual who, having never developed a sense of self, constantly seeks someone to imitate and emulate in order to define her own identity.

Meili's past is defined by abandonment and extreme conditioning. She was left in a forest as an infant, where she would have been devoured by demon beasts if not for her innate blessing, which allowed her to survive and be raised by them. She became known as the queen of the forest, living among the beasts until she was discovered and taken by Elsa Granhiert on the orders of a figure she calls Mama. Under Mama's control, she endured horrifying "training" that stripped away her humanity, leaving her to rebuild herself by copying Elsa's way of speaking, living, and thinking. Her identity became so intertwined with Elsa that after Elsa's death, she is left completely adrift, losing her sole model for how to exist.

Her primary motivation for much of the story is survival and revenge. After being captured for her role in the attack on Roswaal Manor, she agrees to be held in protective custody out of fear of being purged by Mama for her failure. She harbors a deep-seated grudge against Subaru Natsuki and the Emilia Camp for killing Elsa. This resentment drives her to secretly plot her revenge, which culminates in the Pleiades Watchtower arc where she attempts to kill Subaru in several failed loops. Her motivations eventually begin to shift following a confrontation with Subaru, who, after reading her Book of the Dead, comes to understand her inner turmoil and makes a promise to help her without judging her.

Meili's role in the story transitions from that of an antagonist to a reluctant ally and eventually a core member of the Emilia Camp. She is first introduced as the mastermind behind the demon beast incident in Arlam Village in the second arc, though her presence is subtly hidden. She later returns as a major threat during the fourth arc, launching a coordinated assault on Roswaal Manor with Elsa. After being captured by Garfiel Tinsel, she is held in the mansion's dungeon. Following the Sanctuary incident, she is recruited for her unique abilities to help the group safely cross the Auguria Dunes on their way to the Pleiades Watchtower.

Several key relationships define her development. Her bond with Elsa Granhiert is the most important, as she views Elsa not just as a partner but as her beloved older sister and her entire reason for living. Her relationship with Subaru Natsuki is complex and transformative. While she initially hates him for Elsa's death, his persistence in giving her handmade dolls, understanding her pain, and ultimately offering her a place to belong allows her to slowly open her heart. After Elsa's death, she transfers her need for a model onto Subaru, seeking his guidance on how to feel and act. She also develops a close, playful attachment to Shaula at the Pleiades Watchtower, whom she affectionately calls naked onee-san, spending much of her time clinging to the older woman's shoulder.

Over the course of the story, Meili undergoes significant development. She begins as a hollow killer, merely imitating her sister, and gradually moves toward forming her own identity. The incident in the Watchtower is a turning point; after multiple deaths and revelations, Subaru offers her unconditional acceptance and promises to remember her struggles. This act of kindness allows her to begin to shed her revenge and, for the first time, see the possibility of a life where she can be herself rather than a copy of someone else. By the end of the sixth arc, she is no longer a prisoner but an acknowledged and valuable member of the team, aiding in the defense of the tower against the hordes of demon beasts summoned by the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony.

Her notable abilities stem from the Blessing of Beast Manipulation, an innate power that allows her to command and control demon beasts. This ability is so potent that she can override a beast's will without needing to break its horn, the usual method of control, and can command over a hundred of them at once. She refers to the beasts she controls as her naughty little animals. This power, however, is not limitless; controlling a large number of beasts puts a tremendous mental and physical strain on her. Beyond her blessing, she is a surprisingly clever and cautious strategist, preferring to gather information with her beasts and set up thorough ambushes rather than engaging in direct combat. Her body also continuously emits a miasma-like aura similar to the Witch's scent, which was the reason the Emilia Camp initially insisted she live in the basement of Roswaal's mansion.
