Description
Julius Juukulius is a supporting character from the Re:ZERO universe, serving as a knight to Anastasia Hoshin and a member of Lugunica's Royal Guard. He is 21 years old, stands 179 centimeters tall, and has light purple hair neatly arranged with a strand hanging over his face, as well as yellow eyes. Due to mild nearsightedness, he sometimes wears glasses when reading or reviewing documents.

Born to Klein Juukulius, a man who left his noble family to marry a commoner woman named Maria, Julius originally lived as a commoner. When he was 11 years old, the town was hit by a flash flood, and both of his parents perished while trying to rescue others. Following their deaths, Julius was taken in by his uncle, Alviero Juukulius, the head of the main Juukulius family. Since Alviero's biological son, Joshua, was frail and unable to become a knight, Julius was adopted and raised as the family's heir, being groomed to carry on the legacy of the knightly house. Prior to this, he knew nothing of aristocratic life. At the age of eight, his future direction was solidified when he met Reinhard van Astrea at the royal castle, an encounter that inspired him to find his own purpose.

As a member of the nobility and the knight serving Anastasia Hoshin, Julius embodies the ideals of chivalry and carries himself with a proper, noble, and convicted air. He is known as the "Finest of Knights," a title that reflects his extraordinary skill and dedication. He is considerate and caring towards others, yet he also displays a strict side, offering accurate and often harsh assessments of those around him, which is a result of his elite upbringing. He strongly dislikes those who forget their place or act without proper decorum. However, beneath this composed and noble exterior lies a deeply insecure individual. As later pointed out by the first Sword Saint Reid Astrea, Julius desperately clings to his bonds with others to fill the void left in his heart by his parents' death. His strictness towards others, including himself, stems from a belief that he and everyone else can always do better.

Julius's initial role in the story is defined by his antagonistic relationship with the protagonist, Subaru Natsuki. When Subaru publicly insulted the Royal Guard during the royal selection meetings, Julius challenged him to a duel and defeated him decisively. While this act appeared to be one of arrogant retribution, Julius intended it to be a lesson that would spare Subaru from harsher punishment, such as execution, from other offended knights and nobles. After the battle with the White Whale, the two apologized to each other. Although Subaru admitted he still disliked Julius, their relationship began to improve as they cooperated in fighting the Witch Cult. During this time, the two became close, and Julius eventually considered Subaru a friend.

One of the most defining events for Julius occurs when he combats the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Roy Alphard. During their battle, Julius has his name devoured, an act that erases the memory of his existence from everyone who has ever known him. Ironic ally, Subaru Natsuki is the only person in the world who can still remember who Julius is. This event not only isolates him socially but also severs his contracts with the six quasi-spirits he commands, as they too forget him. His journey to the Sage's Tower is driven by a desire to resolve this situation and restore what he has lost. It is there that he confronts his insecurities, severs his forgotten contracts, and immediately reforges them anew. This act allows the six quasi-spirits to bloom into full spirits, and he finally begins to move past his trauma and embrace his true self.

Julius maintains several key relationships. He has a very close bond with his adoptive brother, Joshua Juukulius, whom he loves dearly and blames himself for a childhood incident that nearly killed the sickly boy. He is intensely loyal to his master, Anastasia Hoshin, having pledged himself as her first knight after witnessing her pick up the Dragon Insignia. He shares a deep friendship and mutual respect with Reinhard van Astrea, though he also struggles with feelings of jealousy and inadequacy when compared to the unbeatable Sword Saint. His relationship with Subaru evolves from bitter rivalry to a trusted friendship, particularly after the events of the White Whale subjugation and their collaboration against the Witch Cult.

Julius is a "Spirit Knight," a rare individual who excels in both swordsmanship and spirit magic. He possesses the Divine Protection of Gathering Spirits, which makes him naturally liked and able to communicate with spirits. He is contracted with six quasi-spirits representing the six attributes: Ia (fire), Kua (water), Aro (wind), Ik (earth), In (yang), and Nes (yin). Using these spirits, he can perform a vast array of feats, including healing with water magic, enhancing his own physical strength with yang magic, weakening opponents with yin magic, and using Nect, a high-level spell that links people's gates to share their senses and thoughts. His signature techniques are forms of Clarista, where he imbues his blade with the power of his spirits. Al Clarista releases a long-range beam of pure destructive sixfold energy, while his ultimate attack, Al Cranvel, he cloaks himself in a rainbow-like aura to deliver a devastating strike. After reforging his contract in the Sage's Tower, his power increased significantly. He also rides a blue earth dragon named Shaknar. Through his journey, Julius has developed from a knight obsessed with his perfect image into a more authentic and self-aware hero. A permanent scar under his left eye, received during a duel with Reid Astrea, serves as a physical symbol of his hard-won growth and acceptance of his own flaws.
