Description
Hajime Saitō is a young swordsman and a key supporting character in the Miburo. He is a peer of the protagonist, Nio Chirinu, and is among the youngest members of the group, which is based in Kyoto during a turbulent period in Japan's history.
Born as Jiro in Kyoto, Saitō's early life was marked by profound tragedy. As a child, he witnessed the murder of his parents by bandits, an event that left him orphaned and vulnerable. He was subsequently rescued and adopted by a skilled swordsman who was the first to bear the name Hajime Saitō. This mentor provided the young Jiro with rigorous training in iaijutsu, the art of quick-draw swordsmanship, as well as lessons in samurai etiquette. This period of training was cut short by another tragedy; the first Saitō Hajime was fatally wounded while protecting Jiro from assailants seeking revenge. As his mentor lay dying, Jiro made a solemn vow to honor his legacy and adopted the name Saitō Hajime, styling himself as the "second Saitō Hajime" upon later being taken in by Isami Kondō, the leader of the Miburo.
Saitō’s personality is defined by a stern, abrasive, and often confrontational exterior. He is known for his direct and harsh language, frequently displaying impatience and disdain toward anyone he perceives as weak, indecisive, or lacking conviction. This harsh demeanor is a direct result of his painful past and fuels a deep-seated, almost obsessive focus on personal strength. Despite his roughness, he is not without positive qualities. He remains exceptionally calm and composed even in the most difficult and high-pressure situations, and beneath his critical surface, he possesses a capacity to earnestly look after his comrades, revealing a more caring side that contrasts with his lone wolf image. In one notable incident, his suspicions about an individual's odd confidence and inability to use his left hand led him to take decisive action.
His motivations are intrinsically tied to his past and his need for power. Having suffered great loss due to weakness, Saitō is driven by a burning internal passion and a desire to never be helpless again. He subscribes to a clear and ruthless personal code that prioritizes strength and decisive action, believing that justice must be enforced without hesitation.
Within the story, Saitō serves as one of the primary obstacles and reluctant allies for the protagonist, Nio. As a fellow young member of the Miburo, he is initially resistant to Nio’s presence, often becoming annoyed by Nio’s clumsy and untrained attempts at swordsmanship. His role is that of a talented peer who must be won over. Over time, he and Nio develop a working relationship, often collaborating on missions and learning to trust each other as comrades. His key relationships are with the leadership of the Miburo, particularly Isami Kondō, who acts as his guardian and the leader who gave him a place in the group. He is also recognized as one of the "Three Wolves" of the Miburo, a testament to his fighting prowess and his vigilant nature.
Saitō undergoes subtle but significant development throughout the series. He begins as a detached and critical figure, but interactions with Nio and other members force him to engage with ideals beyond pure strength. His personal journey includes confronting his past, as seen when he loses consciousness and is forced to relive the memories of his traumatic childhood. As the group faces internal strife, such as the plot to assassinate a fellow leader named Serizawa, Saitō is given crucial assignments, such as being ordered to rescue a comrade, demonstrating that he has earned the trust of the Miburo's leadership and is integral to their most dangerous plans.
Saitō's most notable ability is his exceptional mastery of iaijutsu, the quick-draw sword technique. His combat skills are considered to be among the highest within the Miburo, and his immense talent is immediately apparent to those around him. A defining feature of his swordsmanship is that he is left-handed, which gives his fighting style a distinctive and unconventional edge that can catch opponents off guard. His vigilance and combat prowess are such that he is considered one of the group's most formidable warriors, further solidifying his role as a key protector and enforcer for the Miburo.
