Description
Kou Minamoto is a third-year middle school student at Kamome Academy and a member of the historically renowned Minamoto clan, a family of powerful exorcists who have specialized in confronting supernatural entities for generations. He stands out physically with a tall build, short and spiky dirty blond hair, light blue eyes, and noticeably protruding canine teeth that lend his appearance a somewhat rough, delinquent-like impression. This outward image often makes him seem unapproachable to his classmates, but it belies a very different inner nature.

Despite his lineage and the expectations that come with it, Kou is distinguished by a genuine warmth and an open-minded approach toward the supernatural. Where many exorcists would simply eliminate spirits, he possesses a strong moral compass and an instinctive desire to protect others, human and apparition alike. He is energetic, earnest, and frequently cheerful, though he can also be sensitive and reflective when confronting the complexities of the spirit world. Beneath his excitable surface lies a steadfast sense of justice that drives him to question whether every supernatural being is truly malevolent.

Kou's primary motivation is shaped by his family legacy and a personal determination to address a curse or lingering burden that afflicts the Minamoto clan. He feels a deep responsibility to uphold his family's duty, yet he does not blindly follow tradition. Instead, he wants to grow strong enough to break harmful cycles and to better understand the beings he was raised to destroy. This inner conflict between duty and compassion forms the core of his personal arc.

In the story, Kou initially arrives at Kamome Academy with the mission to exorcise the school's famous ghost, Hanako. That mission quickly shifts as he finds himself drawn into an unlikely friendship with Hanako and the human girl Nene Yashiro. He becomes one of the central figures alongside them, functioning as a tritagonist whose presence balances the group dynamic. As the narrative unfolds, Kou evolves from a well-meaning but inexperienced exorcist into someone who truly listens to spirits, even when it challenges his long-held beliefs about good and evil.

His key relationships center on this trio. With Nene, he shares a supportive, protective bond and they often act as mutual anchors in dangerous situations. With Hanako, his relationship is complicated: what began as a hunter-and-target dynamic transforms into a sincere friendship in which Kou learns to see the ghost's pain and hidden depths. Kou's family ties are equally significant. He is the younger brother of Teru, a highly skilled and severe exorcist whose prowess Kou admires but also struggles against, and the older brother of Tiara, toward whom he shows a caring and protective side. These sibling dynamics fuel his competitive spirit and his desire to grow stronger on his own terms.

Kou's development is marked by key turning points where he must choose between the rigid path of an exorcist and a more compassionate course. During the Judgment Arc, he faces difficult decisions that test his convictions and force him to mature beyond family expectations. He gradually learns that truly confronting spirits requires empathy, not just power. His growth is reflected in moments where he sets aside his tools to hear a spirit's sorrow, emphasizing that understanding pain matters as much as banishing threats.

As a member of the Minamoto clan, Kou possesses inherent abilities that include sensing supernatural presences and perceiving what ordinary humans cannot. He is skilled in using exorcism tools such as talismans, traps, and protective seals. His signature weapon is a family heirloom called Raiseishou, a spirit relic capable of transforming its wielder's spiritual energy into purifying lightning. Though his powers are considerable for his age, they remain limited by his still-developing understanding of the supernatural world, and his greatest strength ultimately lies not in raw force but in his willingness to question and connect with those he encounters.
