Description
Hiroya Okuyama is a character who appears in MF Ghost, having first been introduced in the preceding series Initial D. His history as a street racer is integral to his identity and role in the story. In his younger days, Okuyama was the number one driver for a team called Team Spiral, where he was known as Zero One and drove a Nissan Silvia S15. During this period, he was a firm believer in the Zero Theory, a driving philosophy that emphasized a neutral, almost spiritual approach to racing. His personality at that time was notably arrogant and overconfident in his abilities, a trait that led him to behave disrespectfully, such as refusing to greet opposing teams like Project D.

A pivotal event in Okuyama's past is his racing defeat at the hands of the legendary driver Takumi Fujiwara. Takumi famously left him behind after the first hairpin turn of their battle, a loss that had a profound and lasting impact. It is this defeat that frames his motivations in MF Ghost. He holds Takumi in the highest esteem, acknowledging that every racer of his generation in the northern Kanto region knows of his prowess. Rather than fostering resentment, his encounter with Takumi seems to have humbled him, contributing to a significant evolution in his character.

By the time of MF Ghost, Okuyama has matured into a much calmer and more professional individual. He has channeled his passion for cars into a more constructive and respectable profession, running his own tuning shop called Spiral Zero Auto Shop. In this capacity, he serves a crucial role in the story as the tuner and mechanic for the protagonist, Kanata Rivington. He is brought into the project by professional racer Shun Aiba, who respects Okuyama and credits him with helping him make his own breakthrough in racing. Okuyama works closely with Kanata's manager, Ogata, to develop and upgrade the Toyota 86 that Kanata drives. His approach is strategic and methodical; his initial plan involves first upgrading the suspension before moving on to strengthening the engine, eventually fitting the car with a turbo kit to significantly increase its power output. Okuyama is not just a mechanic but also a former racer, and his deep understanding of vehicle dynamics and the demands of competitive driving makes his technical advice invaluable.

His key relationships are primarily professional but built on a foundation of mutual respect. He has a long-standing connection with Shun Aiba, whose own GT-R is tuned at Okuyama's shop. He also develops a working relationship with Kanata, and through this connection, is indirectly linked to the legacy of Takumi Fujiwara, who is Kanata's mentor. This relationship brings his past full circle, as he now uses his skills to support the student of the man who once defeated him. In terms of appearance, he is depicted as an adult male with black hair, blue eyes, and often wears a jumpsuit consistent with his profession as a mechanic. Okuyama's development is a key part of his character, showcasing a transition from a brash, arrogant street racer to a wise, skilled, and respected tuning specialist who has found success and meaning in the automotive world beyond his own driving career. His notable ability lies in his exceptional tuning skills and mechanical knowledge, which are portrayed as being of a very high caliber and essential to the protagonist's success in the MFG races.
