Description
Pham is a recurring character in the anime As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill. He serves as the young leader of Shadow, a mercenary band that specializes in information gathering and has its roots in criminal work. His real name is Mazak Find, though he regards that name as something he abandoned long ago. In early English translations of the manga his name was rendered as Famme before being standardized to Pham.
Pham is a man who frequently disguises himself as a woman, typically posing as a tavern waitress while carrying out his work. His disguise is so convincing that almost no one sees through it; the only character able to identify his true gender at a glance is Mireille Grangeon, and the protagonist Ars Louvent only realizes Pham is male after reading his status with the appraisal skill. Because of his feminine appearance, he is easily mistaken for an innocent young woman when he is actually a highly capable operative.
In terms of personality, Pham is cautious and selective about the jobs he takes on. He reviews both the client and the nature of a request before agreeing to it, and he refuses work he dislikes even when the payment is generous. Having spent much of his life operating in the shadows, he has been feared and called a demon, and he treats emotions and mercy as liabilities in his profession. Despite this hardened outlook, he develops genuine respect for Ars after witnessing how devoted Ars's retainers and allies are to him and how sincerely Ars values the people around him.
His motivations shift over the course of the story. Early on, he works as a mercenary for money and takes on morally gray assignments, even ones that could be described as selling his soul for profit. Over time, he becomes convinced that Ars will rise to become the most significant figure in the Samasforce Empire and chooses to attach himself to that cause. He eventually asks Ars to take him on as a vassal, offering his service in place of a reward, and expresses that being close to Ars makes him feel like he can remain human despite the dark world he comes from.
In the story, Pham first appears while disguised as a waitress and gradually becomes a recurring ally who handles information gathering and covert missions for Ars. His role expands as he and the entire Shadow group become Ars's subordinates, strengthening Ars's ability to gather intelligence and operate behind enemy lines. The members of Shadow accept his decision without protest, trusting his judgment.
Pham's notable abilities lie in intelligence work, infiltration, and disguise. Though his leadership stat is not particularly high, his overall status is nearly maxed out, a level of strength that astonishes Ars, who compares him to the famous historical ninja Hattori Hanzo. His combat and stealth skills, combined with his talent for deception, make him one of the more versatile figures in Ars's circle. His key relationships include his bond with Ars, built on trust and mutual respect, and his connection to Mireille, the only person who can instantly see through his disguises.
