Description
Polonius is a supporting character in the anime film Scarlet, also known as Hateshinaki Scarlet. He appears as one of the retainers of Claudius, the film's chief antagonist, and serves as an obstacle to the protagonist, Princess Scarlet, during her journey through the Land of the Dead, the realm where the living and the dead coexist. The name Polonius is a reference to the character of the same name from William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, a play that the film draws inspiration from.

In terms of background, Polonius is introduced mainly as a servant of Claudius rather than as a figure with a personal history. After Cornelius, another of Claudius's agents, fails to capture Scarlet, Claudius assigns Polonius, Laertes, Guildenstern, and Rosencrantz the task of locating and killing the princess. Alongside Laertes, Polonius keeps watch over the movements of Scarlet and her companion Hijiri as they travel through the Land of the Dead.

Polonius's motivation is tied to his service to Claudius. The film does not give him personal ambitions or independent reasons for hunting Scarlet, and his personality is conveyed primarily through his actions as an enforcer who carries out his master's orders. His most notable relationship is with Laertes, with whom he operates as a pair, and his loyalty to Claudius defines his place in the story. He is also one of several named adversaries, including Guildenstern, Rosencrantz, Cornelius, and Voltimand, whom Claudius dispatches against Scarlet.

His role in the story reaches its peak late in the film, when he and Laertes attack Scarlet and Hijiri as they climb a mountain in search of the stairway to the Infinite Land. The attack fails when Cornelius and Voltimand arrive to aid Scarlet and Hijiri, and Polonius is finished off in the ensuing fight, which ends his involvement in the story. He does not undergo any personal development or change over the course of the film.

In terms of abilities, Polonius is shown as a combatant capable of taking part in armed confrontation during the ambush, but the film does not grant him any supernatural powers or special techniques. He relies on force alongside Laertes rather than on any distinctive talents. Overall, Polonius functions as a minor antagonist whose purpose is to represent the threat of Claudius's forces and to provide one more obstacle on Scarlet's path, rather than as a deeply developed character with his own arc.
