Description
Kurea Furudate is a first-year university student and a core member of the Food Culture Research Club, where she serves as the deputy leader. She was one of the initial three members who founded the club alongside Shinon Ogawa and Tsutsuji Higa before later being joined by Mako Kawai and Nana Hoshi. Outside of campus, Kurea helps out at her mother’s family restaurant, the same katsudon shop that Mako had often passed by but had been too shy to enter. It is Kurea’s gentle encouragement that finally gives Mako the courage to try the restaurant, an act that becomes a key step in Mako’s personal growth and her deepening involvement with the group.
In terms of personality, Kurea presents herself as a reliable and level-headed big-sister figure to those around her. She is the most responsible member of the club, often taking the lead in making decisions and ensuring that activities stay on track even when others become distracted or move at their own pace. Beneath her confident exterior, however, she can be somewhat stubborn and occasionally acts tougher than she actually feels, reluctant to show vulnerability. Despite this, she is deeply caring and attentive to her friends’ needs, frequently checking in on Mako’s well-being and stepping up to offer emotional support or practical help.
Her primary motivation is to foster a space where she and her friends can share enjoyable food experiences and build lasting memories together. While the club’s official purpose involves food research, for Kurea it is just as much a place to relax, laugh, and deepen friendships. She genuinely loves cooking and takes pride in the meals she prepares for the group, often working alongside Mako in the club’s makeshift kitchen. Throughout the series, she helps organize outings, solve minor crises like lost money or being locked inside a campus building, and maintain a sense of stability that allows the more timid members, such as Mako and Nana, to feel comfortable.
Kurea’s relationships with the other members are central to her character. She has a long-standing friendship with Shinon, who first proposed the club, and with Tsutsuji, the other founding member. With Mako, she develops a supportive mentor-like bond, encouraging her to try new foods and reassuring her when she worries about things like a late Christmas gift or whether she is making the most of her university life. When Nana joins as an extremely shy fifth member, Kurea again adopts a patient and welcoming attitude. In turn, Kurea also learns to lean on her friends: during a trip to Mako’s hometown, she becomes exhausted from driving and willingly lets Shinon take over, and in a quiet moment late in the series, Mako reminds her that it is never too late to create memories, a reassurance that visibly touches her.
As the series progresses, Kurea does not undergo a dramatic transformation, but she consistently exemplifies the quiet strength and dependability that hold the club together. Her development is subtle, seen in the way she gradually lets her guard down and allows others to support her, as well as in the small, everyday acts of leadership and kindness she performs. She remains the group’s anchor, the one who knows of a peaceful shrine to visit on New Year’s Eve and who makes sure the kotatsu is warm and the food is ready, ensuring that the Food Culture Research Club continues to be a place where everyone can belong.
Her notable abilities include practical cooking skills honed through her work at the family restaurant, a calm and organized approach to problem-solving, and a natural talent for reading the emotional needs of those around her. She is often the one to voice the group’s decisions, from suggesting a dish to preparing for a club inspection, and her cooking, particularly alongside Mako, becomes a recurring highlight of the club’s activities. In a story centered on friendship and the simple joy of eating together, Kurea Furudate stands out as the mature, steady presence who quietly enables everyone around her to grow, experiment, and savor each moment.
