TV-Series
Description
Mako Kawai is a first-year university student and the main protagonist of the anime. She has an average build with black hair that reaches her collarbone, usually worn straight, and yellow eyes. As a child in elementary school, she was energetic and outgoing, but by the time she entered middle school she had become much more reserved. As a young adult living alone for the first time, she finds it difficult to try new things or interact with strangers, often rationalizing her shyness as not wanting to inconvenience others. Her primary source of comfort is cooking: she spends much of her free time watching food videos online and recreating gourmet dishes in her small kitchen. She absolutely loves eating and becomes visibly excited whenever food is the topic, sometimes gaining an intense, eagle-eyed expression at the prospect of something delicious. Despite her passion, her social anxiety prevents her from exploring restaurants on her own.

The story begins when she is approached by Shinon Ogawa, a childhood friend from elementary school whom she has not seen in years. Shinon, still as extroverted as ever, quickly reintroduces Mako to her new circle, which includes the easygoing Tsutsuji Higa and the level-headed Kurea Furutachi. The three are trying to form a Food Culture Research Club and need one more member. Though Mako initially declines, she later gains the courage to visit a restaurant she had been curious about—Kurea’s family-run sauce katsudon shop—and, encouraged by the experience, decides to join. She soon learns that the club is essentially a pretext for the girls to have a place to hang out and enjoy food together.

Mako’s role in the club is central. She is often the one who takes the lead in cooking when the group needs to demonstrate valid activity for university inspections, using recipes she has learned online. Her growing bond with the other members becomes the driving force of her personal development. With Shinon, she rediscovers the joy of shared meals; with Kurea, she gains a sense of discipline and encouragement; with Tsutsuji, she finds a relaxed and supportive friend; and with the later-joining Nana Hoshi, she learns to appreciate the quiet, intellectual side of cooking and friendship. Over the course of the series, Mako gradually overcomes her hesitations, eating at restaurants with others, climbing a mountain to dine at its summit, and even helping a shy new member feel welcomed. She evolves from a solitary home cook into an active participant in campus life, learning that sharing food can be just as rewarding as the food itself. Her most notable abilities are her skill at following and adapting recipes, her deep appreciation for flavors, and her ability—through her own quiet passion—to draw others into the joy of eating together.
