Description
Ichitarō Hirose is a character from the anime Fermat no Ryōri, recognized as a prodigious mathematical genius whose talent sets him apart from nearly everyone around him. He is a young man with a distinctive appearance, characterized by his shaved head and a pair of glasses that contribute to an impression of intense focus and intellect.

Hirose's personality is defined by his absolute and singular dedication to mathematics. He is deeply eccentric, showing little to no interest in topics that fall outside the realm of numbers and theory, including food. This detachment from daily life manifests in peculiar habits; in the live-action drama adaptation, for instance, he avoids normal meals and consumes only gummy candy. Despite this intense and often cold exterior, he is not without warmth. He is capable of expressing genuine joy and interest, particularly when confronted with the sincere passion of others, such as his childhood friend Gaku Kitada's dedication to cooking.

His background is rooted in a childhood defined by fierce academic rivalry. From a young age, Hirose competed alongside Gaku Kitada and Kagura Musashi in junior mathematics competitions. His brilliance quickly became overwhelming; he was the top student at the Spring Training Camp for the Mathematical Olympiad, which led to him becoming a national representative. His success at the international level, where he won a gold medal for Japan, was so complete that it inadvertently caused Gaku to abandon his own dream of pursuing mathematics. After high school, Hirose went on to study at Princeton University, further cementing his global prestige.

Within the story, Hirose serves as a pivotal figure from Gaku's past. He re-enters the narrative during a prestigious award ceremony held at the Taihou Hotel, where he is receiving the Masami Kusunose Special Prize, one of Japan's highest recognitions in mathematics for young scholars, which he earned at the age of 18. This event is a major turning point, as it is here that he reconnects with Gaku and tastes a dessert prepared by him. Moved by Gaku's passion expressed through his cooking, Hirose begins to show a rare and genuine interest in the culinary world.

His key relationships are defined by his childhood connections. He shares a complex bond with Gaku Kitada, one of rivalry and inspiration that also caused Gaku significant emotional setbacks. Despite this history, Hirose has always held a vision of the three friends—himself, Gaku, and Kagura—working together again to solve the deepest mysteries of the universe, a dream he continues to harbor. His development in the story is subtle but significant, marked by an opening of his world as he starts to appreciate a discipline outside of mathematics through the lens of his friend's devotion. His notable abilities are, of course, his extraordinary mathematical talent, which allows him to solve complex problems with ease and has earned him awards and accolades that few can aspire to.
