Description
The Queen of the Crown is the tyrannical ruler of the Crown Empire, a vast interstellar domain that is shown to be crumbling during the events of the series. She controls a large number of planets across a wide region of the galaxy and governs them as a cruel tyrant. The series never fully explains how she initially rose to power, how the Crown Empire was originally formed, or what caused its decline.
The Queen maintains control over her empire through the Slaver Lords, constructs that draw their power from the life force of other beings contained within objects known as psychocrystals. Because she shares a psychic link with the Slaver Lords, she is able to see and hear whatever they experience, using them as enforcers and as extensions of her own perception. After the Crown Empire encountered humans, she discovered that human beings were more suitable for energy extraction than any other species previously encountered, which made human captives particularly valuable to her. She imprisoned the minds of captured individuals in psychocrystals, a collection referred to as her Psychic Crypt.
In the series, the Queen functions as the central antagonist, and her actions drive much of the conflict. Her abduction of Eliza Foxx, the wife of Ranger captain Zachary Foxx, at the outset of the story gives the Rangers a personal stake in opposing her. In the episode Queen's Lair, she develops a weapon built around a neutron star and demands that Earth send humans for her Psychic Crypt, threatening to turn the weapon on Earth and other Alliance worlds if her demand is refused. In another episode, Rogue Arm, she sends a new psychocrystal through hyperspace to invade a ship being tested by the Rangers. She also devises a plan to capture unsuspecting humans by using an interstellar music competition as a cover.
Her personality is characterized by cruelty and a willingness to sacrifice entire populations to preserve her rule. On the planet Tortuna, she is said to have destroyed virtually all of the planet's population, leaving only a handful of surviving domed cities. The series presents her intentions and motivations as evil, and she shows little regard for individual lives.
Her key relationship in the story is with Zachary Foxx, whose wife she holds captive, making her both a personal enemy and the Rangers' larger strategic foe. She commands the Slaver Lords and other servants of the Crown Empire in her efforts to expand and sustain her power.
