Corinne Orr

Description
Corinne Orr is a Canadian-born actress widely recognized as a pioneering voice artist in the English-language dubbing of Japanese anime, with a career spanning from the 1960s to the present day. Born in Montreal, Canada, on January 6, 1936, she began her acting career at a young age, starting in children's theatre at ten and working professionally by fourteen with companies like the Montreal Repertory Theatre alongside actors such as William Shatner. Her early work in Canada included radio dramas for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the role of Suzie the Mouse on the children's television program Chez Helene.

After relocating to New York City, Orr established herself as a prolific voice actress, becoming a key figure in the dubbing of Japanese animated series and films for American audiences during the 1960s and 1970s. She is best known for her extensive work on the iconic anime series Speed Racer, where she provided the voices for multiple characters, including Trixie Fontaine, Speed's girlfriend; his younger brother, Spritle; and Mom Racer. Her ability to voice both female and child characters made her an invaluable asset in an era when dubbing casts were often small. She frequently collaborated with voice actor and director Peter Fernandez on these projects, forming a longstanding professional partnership.

Orr's extensive filmography includes numerous classic anime roles. She voiced Princess Rose in The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots, Princess Margaret in Jack and the Beanstalk, Hilda in The Little Norse Prince (also known as Horus: Prince of the Sun), and Elisa in The World of Hans Christian Andersen. In a rare dramatic role, she voiced the young girl Setsuko in the Central Park Media English dub of the acclaimed film Grave of the Fireflies, for which she was credited under the pseudonym Rhoda Chrosite. Her other notable credits include Marine Boy, where she voiced the title character and Neptina, and roles in Unico in the Island of Magic, Star Blazers, and later, the film Kai Doh Maru.

Beyond anime, Corinne Orr's versatile voice has been heard in thousands of commercial spots, most famously as the voice of the Snuggle fabric softener bear for fifteen years. She has also contributed to American animated series such as The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders, and children's programs like PB&J Otter and Sesame Street. She made a cameo voice appearance as a Grand Prix announcer in the 2008 live-action film Speed Racer.

Throughout her career, Orr has been recognized for her contributions to the industry. She served on the Screen Actors Guild council for thirteen years and was a judge for the Daytime Emmy Awards for eighteen years. She has been a guest of honor at numerous anime and entertainment conventions and was featured in the documentary Otaku Unite! and the Paley Archive's Women in Film series.
