Description
Ken Takakura, almost exclusively referred to by his nickname Okarun, is a high school boy and one of the two protagonists of the story. He is initially presented as a shy, meek, and friendless student who is frequently the target of bullying by his classmates. His nickname, Okarun, is derived from the word "occult" due to his intense fascination with the supernatural, particularly aliens, UFOs, and conspiracy theories. The name was given to him by Momo Ayase so she would not be reminded of her celebrity crush, actor Ken Takakura, though Okarun himself remains largely oblivious to this reason.

Okarun is defined by a deep-seated loneliness and a desperate desire for connection, which fuels his passion for the occult as a potential source of belonging. Before meeting Momo, his interests made him an outcast, leading him to believe in aliens partly because he hoped they might be friendlier than humans. His personality is a study in contrasts; in his daily life, he is timid, anxious, and prone to overthinking mundane social interactions, such as how to greet a friend in the morning. However, this is paired with a quietly fierce and protective core. When he perceives an injustice or a threat to someone he cares about, particularly Momo, his reserved nature gives way to surprising displays of courage and aggression.

His primary motivation throughout the series is closely tied to his relationship with Momo, who becomes his first real friend after she defends him from bullies. Their friendship, born from a disagreement about the existence of ghosts and aliens, quickly becomes the anchor of his life. Okarun values their bond immensely and is driven to protect her from the countless paranormal threats they face. This protective instinct is so powerful that it is what allows him to initially gain control over a dangerous curse. Over time, his feelings for Momo deepen into romantic love, a development he eventually acknowledges and confesses, moving beyond his initial self-doubt and social awkwardness.

Okarun’s role in the story is that of the heart and the unexpected warrior. He begins as a passive victim of circumstance but is thrust into a hidden war against both yokai (supernatural spirits) and aliens. After a fateful encounter in a haunted tunnel, he is cursed by a powerful spirit known as Turbo Granny, who steals his genitals. This curse becomes the source of his extraordinary abilities, making him the group's primary close-quarters combatant. His journey is one of self-discovery, learning to harness a terrifying power while also growing more confident in his own identity as a person worthy of friendship and love.

His most significant relationship is, without a doubt, with Momo Ayase. Their dynamic is a slow-burning romance built on mutual respect and unwavering support. They begin as polar opposites in temperament—Momo is brash and confident while Okarun is reserved and insecure—but their shared experiences fighting the paranormal forge an unbreakable bond. They become each other’s safe space, allowing each other to be their authentic, eccentric selves. He also forms key relationships with other characters, including Seiko, Momo's no-nonsense grandmother who becomes a mentor figure, and other classmates like Aira and Jiji, who join their group. These friendships further pull him out of his shell and solidify his role within a found family.

Okarun’s character development is central to the narrative. He evolves from a lonely, bullied outcast into a confident and capable young man with a strong sense of purpose. His arc is a classic journey from "nobody to somebody," handled with sincerity as his psychic powers and combat prowess serve as an external manifestation of his suppressed confidence finally boiling over. The curse that took his manhood ironically becomes the catalyst for his growth into a hero. Even when his initial borrowed power is eventually lost, he continues to develop, taking on new challenges and finding new sources of strength, demonstrating that his courage is inherent, not just a product of his curse.

In terms of notable abilities, Okarun’s primary power comes from being possessed by the Turbo Granny. This curse allows him to transform into a powerful, beastly spirit-form that grants him immense speed, strength, and reflexes far beyond a normal human. In this state, often called his "All-Out" mode, he can run at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, though his stamina limits him to using this burst of power only twice in quick succession. He also learns to teleport by traveling through telephone wires and can perform astral projection. To maintain control and prevent the malicious spirit from taking over his mind, he must rely on Momo's psychic abilities to keep the curse in check, allowing him to use its power consciously. This transforms him into a formidable fighter, able to combat both the alien Serpoians and various yokai, utilizing his incredible speed as his primary weapon.
