Description
Fumine Sonozaki, later known by the alias Shroud, is a character who appears in the flashback narrative of Fuuto PI: The Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull. Her role is integral to understanding the origins of the Narumi Detective Agency and the final days of the original Kamen Rider Skull.
Originally, Fumine was the matriarch of the Sonozaki family, a powerful and influential clan in Fuuto. She was the wife of Ryubei Sonozaki, the patriarch who led the Museum organization in its mission to spread dangerous Gaia Memories throughout the city. Together, they had three children: daughters Saeko and Wakana, and a son named Raito, who would later come to be known as Philip. Her life took a dramatic turn when her husband became obsessed with the power of the True Gaia Memory, a plan that ultimately threatened their own family. In response, Fumine fled the family, rejecting Ryubei's actions and adopting the codename Shroud, which means a burial garment, symbolizing her lost life and vengeful purpose.
As Shroud, her personality is defined by a cold, calculated, and driven quest for revenge against the Museum and her husband. Ryubei himself refers to her as the embodiment of rage. In her initial pursuit of revenge, she is known to be manipulative, viewing others primarily as tools to achieve her goal of destroying her former family's criminal empire. She shows little concern for the well-being of those she uses, including potential allies. However, beneath this hardened exterior lies a deep-seated care for her son, Raito, whom she is desperate to save from being exploited by Museum as a living computer.
Her primary motivation is the complete and utter destruction of the Museum organization and her husband, Ryubei. She blames them for the corruption of her family and the dehumanization of her son. To this end, she becomes a secret benefactor, using her knowledge of Gaia Memories to create powerful weapons and technology to combat the Dopants. In the events of The Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull, Shroud acts as a client, hiring the detective Sokichi Narumi for a critical mission. The job is to infiltrate the Sonozaki estate and rescue her son, Raito, freeing him from the family's control. This mission ultimately sets the stage for the partnership between Sokichi's protégé, Shotaro Hidari, and Philip.
Shroud's most significant relationship is with her son, Philip. While she fled her family, she never abandoned him, working in the shadows to secure his freedom. She serves as his benefactor, providing him with the tools and opportunities to escape his predetermined fate. She also has a complex history with Sokichi Narumi, as she provided him refuge when she first left her family, and he later became a trusted ally and the detective she chose for the dangerous rescue mission. Her relationship with Ryu Terui, the man who would become Kamen Rider Accel, is another example of her pragmatic nature, as she initially views him as a tool for revenge, a perspective she eventually comes to regret.
The character undergoes notable development from a purely vengeful figure to one who recognizes the flaws in her approach. Initially focused only on her vendetta, she eventually comes to see that fighting for revenge is unnecessary and apologizes to those she manipulated, such as Ryu Terui, for the pain she caused. In The Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull, she is seen in a transitional phase, actively orchestrating the events that will lead to a new generation of Kamen Riders capable of finishing what she started.
Regarding notable abilities, Shroud is not a fighter or a Kamen Rider herself, but she is a brilliant scientist and inventor. She is responsible for creating or facilitating the development of key pieces of technology, including the Lost Driver and the Skull Memory that Sokichi Narumi uses to become Kamen Rider Skull. Her knowledge of Gaia Memory mechanics is extensive, allowing her to craft tools essential for the Riders' fight against the Museum. In Fuuto PI: The Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull, her ability is not physical combat, but strategic planning and technological expertise.
