Description
Kang Horyang, originally named Beniamino Ilmar, is an E-Rank Regular and a member of the team led by Jue Viole Grace during the Workshop Battle arc. He is a massive, brooding figure, often appearing quiet and reserved. His physical appearance is distinctive, marked by a strange, wing-like manifestation that floats above his right shoulder, which under normal circumstances gives him the appearance of a one-winged angel. This mark is not merely cosmetic; it changes form and color in response to his thoughts, emotions, and combat needs, shifting from its default blue to red when he is embarrassed or transforming into shapes like a boot to enhance speed or a shield to bolster defense.
His past is deeply tragic, rooted in being one of the first successful human experiments by the Workshop to create a Living Ignition Weapon. As an orphan born on a restricted floor of the Tower where unauthorized children were often taken, he was designated as Number 21 and subjected to torturous experimentation alongside his only childhood friend, Number 99, later known as Beniamino Cassano. During their imprisonment, a nurse named Ms. Sophia was the sole source of kindness in their lives, giving them their names before they underwent a final, harrowing procedure in which each was implanted with half of a demon's soul. Kang received the right half, which is the source of his immense power and his nickname, the Devil of the Right Arm. He eventually escaped his captors not through force, but through the intervention of Headon, the caretaker of the Tower's first floor, who spirited him away. Kang awoke from this encounter inside the Tower, designated as a Regular, and began to climb.
Despite his fearsome abilities and painful history, Kang possesses a gentle heart. He is uncomfortable using the powers born from the suffering of countless sacrifices and is often taciturn and reserved, preferring to keep his own counsel. He is fiercely loyal to his teammates, whom he considers his found family, and this loyalty is a primary motivator for his actions. His central motivation throughout the Workshop Battle arc is to reunite with Cassano, his former friend and adoptive brother. When a photo of a man bearing a striking resemblance to him appears, Kang identifies the figure as Cassano and becomes determined to find him, hoping to reconnect with the only person who shared his traumatic past.
Within the story, Kang serves as a key member of Viole's team, providing significant combat strength. His search for Cassano becomes a major narrative thread, driving a portion of the team's actions as they head toward the Workshop Battle. He shares a complex relationship with Viole, whom he initially confronts about the source of his power, suspecting that Viole may have undergone similar experiments. Ultimately, Kang recognizes that Viole is also a victim and does not have the answers he seeks, forging a bond of mutual understanding between them. He takes on a protective, older-brother-like role for the others, especially Prince and the younger member Miseng, and harbors a quiet, unspoken romantic affection for another teammate, Yeo Goseng. Although he and the gruff Hon Akraptor initially clash, they develop a strong friendship built on mutual respect.
Kang’s character development centers on his struggle to reconcile his traumatic origins with his desire to live a normal life as a Regular. He initially hides the full extent of his past and powers, revealing his story only when his past comes looking for him. His decision to seek out Cassano alone, to protect his new friends from potential danger, shows his self-sacrificing nature and his deep fear of dragging others into the darkness of his past. This act of leaving his team to face a personal demon represents a key point of growth, as he chooses to confront his history directly rather than run from it.
Kang's notable abilities are derived from his nature as a Living Ignition Weapon. He is an exceptionally powerful hand-to-hand combatant, and his implanted demon soul grants him several combat modes. Primarily, he uses his Red Fist, which allows his right hand to grow to an enormous size for devastating physical attacks. He can further augment this into a Fire Fist, adding flames to the blow for increased destructive power. For defense, he can manifest a Strong Shield that makes his body nearly invulnerable, and for mobility, he can transform his wing into a Boot to greatly enhance his speed. When he unleashes the full power of the demon sealed in his right arm, his wing grows dramatically, transforming him from a one-winged angel into a fearsome, one-winged devil and giving him access to his maximum level of strength.
