TV-Series
Description
Genau is a supporting character who serves as a proctor for the First Class Mage Examination and later as a field agent for the Continental Magic Association. As a disciple of the great mage Serie, he holds the rank of First Class Mage and is entrusted with high-level duties, including the extermination of dangerous demons on the Northern Plateau.
Genau is a tall, middle-aged man who typically wears a black trench coat with an upturned collar, often paired with a simple white cravat. His demeanor is perpetually stoic and severe, and he rarely shows changes in his expression.
On the surface, Genau appears to be an extremely cold-hearted and pragmatic individual. He designed the first stage of the mage exam to be deliberately ruthless, creating conflict among participants and showing little remorse for those who died, arguing that a promising mage would not fall in a mere test. When his own hometown was massacred, he claimed to feel nothing but indifference, and at his former partner's funeral, his words seemed hollow and emotionless, leading Serie to call him an abominable man without a hint of kindness.
However, this icy exterior conceals a much more complex and troubled inner world. Genau harbors significant self-loathing and survivors guilt. Having witnessed many deaths, he questions why someone as cold as himself continues to survive while kinder individuals perish. His statement that anyone who enjoys fighting is not a decent person reflects a critical self-awareness, as he acknowledges his own battle-driven nature. Despite his claims of indifference, both Frieren and Methode noted his incredibly strong killing intent when confronting the demons who destroyed his village, revealing the depth of his hidden rage and sense of responsibility.
This internal conflict is most evident when his actions inadvertently reveal his true nature. Even as he mocks himself for feeling nothing, he chose to remain alone in his ruined village to protect the corpses of the dead from being devoured by monsters, demonstrating a profound sense of duty. During the battle with the demon general Revolte, he instinctively rushed to save a child who turned out to be a demon in disguise, immediately getting stabbed for his trouble. This impulse mirrored the exact behavior that had led to his former partners death, showing that beneath his hardened shell, Genau possesses the same awkward, self-destructive kindness he claims to despise. After witnessing this, Stark described him as a good person.
Genau's primary motivation is the extermination of demons, driven by personal loss and a grim sense of professional duty. His homeland was destroyed by the demon general Revolte, who also killed his previous partner. He has a self-punishing side, believing that his own survival is unjust when so many others have died. He is motivated not by heroism but by a grim resolve to finish the task, viewing himself as a tool for extermination rather than a savior.
In the story, Genau first appears as the proctor of the first stage of the First Class Mage Exam, where his ruthless testing methods immediately establish his reputation. Later, he is dispatched by Serie to the Northern Plateau to subjugate the demon general Revolte. He is partnered with Methode, a warm and empathetic mage who contrasts sharply with his personality. During this mission, he is joined by Frieren, Fern, and Stark. While the mages search for the enemy, Genau chooses to stay behind with Stark to guard the corpses in his village, leading to a direct confrontation with Revolte.
His key relationships reveal different facets of his character. He shows deep reverence for Serie, refusing to believe any mage could break her barrier and loyally carrying out her orders despite the psychological toll. His former partner, an exceptionally kind man who treated him like a close friend, represents the ideal he feels he falls short of; his death serves as a catalyst for Genau's guilt. He is initially unwelcoming to his new partner, Methode, but learns to cooperate with her guidance. With Stark, he finds a comrade who also understands the loss of a hometown; they fight back-to-back against Revolte, and Genau shows a protective instinct toward the younger warrior, even gesturing for Methode to heal Stark first after the battle.
Regarding notable abilities, Genau is a mage who excels at close-quarters combat, possessing reflexes and resilience that rival skilled warriors. His signature magic is Digardnacht, which allows him to manifest large wings made of niello, or black gold, from his back. These wings are incredibly sturdy, serving as both shields to deflect powerful attacks and as blades to deliver sharp slashes. They also grant him the ability to fly, providing superior mobility in battle. He also utilizes bird familiar magic for reconnaissance, allowing him to share the field of vision of his avian spies. Genau is highly skilled in barrier magic, which he uses to secure areas and protect the dead. His combat experience is vast, having spent years on the front lines against demons, making him one of the most formidable human mages despite his self-critical nature.
