Description
Gorō Fujita, a Meiji-era police officer and former Shinsengumi member, exhibits an aggressive and stubborn demeanor that fuels his distrust of others. This skepticism leads to initial hostility toward Mei Ayazuki upon her suspicious arrival. He surveils Mei due to her spirit-seeing abilities, which he deems a threat to public order. Despite his harsh exterior, Fujita displays underlying kindness and protectiveness, evidenced by sewing Mei’s torn kimono and intervening during her peril.

Specializing in supernatural cases within the Youraka police division, Fujita combats malicious spirits using a katana whose reflection detects entities. This power originated when a ghost possessing his friend transferred to his blade, cementing his ruthless efficiency and deep-seated aversion to spirits.

His development involves gradually building trust with Mei. After detaining her as a suspect, he shifts to acting as her protector, rescuing her from kidnappers and ensuring her safety while maintaining a stoic facade. He acknowledges endangering her unintentionally and adjusts his conduct accordingly. Fujita clashes with researcher Yakumo Koizumi over Yakumo's spirit fascination, yet they collaborate on supernatural cases.

In *Hanakagami no Fantasia*, Fujita suffers offscreen possession by an onmoraki—a spirit tied to shards of a mystical flower mirror. This vulnerability highlights persistent supernatural threats in his work. The narrative confirms his survival and return to duty post-possession.

Across all portrayals, Fujita’s Shinsengumi background implicitly shapes his discipline and combat skills. His arc balances duty-bound rigidity with burgeoning empathy, particularly toward Mei, without compromising his commitment to eradicating harmful spirits.
