Description
Fernando Ziltonia is a fictional character from the light novel and anime series The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold To Another Kingdom. He holds the position of the first prince of the Ziltonia Kingdom. Fernando is the older brother of the antagonistic second prince, Julius Ziltonia, and is the son of the reigning but ailing King of Ziltonia.

Physically, Fernando is characterized by a constitution that is notably weak and sickly. This longstanding frailty has been a defining condition throughout his life. In personality, Fernando initially presents as a deeply resigned and self-defeating individual. He is intelligent, possessing a sharp and capable mind, but his will has been systematically worn down by years of psychological torment and ridicule from his younger brother, Julius, and the faction of nobles who support him. He believes that his poor health serves as a convenient excuse for his political rivals, who argue he is unfit to be the heir to the throne. Because of this, he has largely confined himself to his room, accepting his fate and effectively removing himself from the struggle for succession.

Fernando's core motivation shifts over the course of the story. Initially, his primary drive is one of survival through self-preservation and avoidance. He stops taking a medicine that could improve his health because he is afraid that if he becomes strong, Julius will see him as a genuine threat and move to have him killed, potentially plunging the kingdom into civil war. He confesses that his withdrawal is rooted in fear of being denied and ridiculed, preferring the certainty of his weak status over the terrifying unknown of challenging his brother.

Fernando's primary role in the story is that of a hidden asset and a legitimate rival to Julius. The protagonist, Mia Adenauer, recognizes that as the first prince, Fernando is the only person with the legal and political standing to effectively counter Julius's usurpation of power. His role evolves from a passive, imprisoned observer to an active participant and leader in the struggle to save the kingdom from both internal corruption and external monstrous threats.

The most critical relationship in Fernando's life is with his brother, Julius. This is a deeply antagonistic and abusive dynamic, with Julius actively undermining Fernando's position and plotting to eliminate him entirely to seize the throne. Another pivotal relationship is with Mia Adenauer. She acts as the catalyst for his entire character development. Unlike others who have given up on him, Mia persistently seeks him out, appeals to his sense of duty, and offers him the courage and support he needs to fight back. Her unwavering belief in him helps him break free from his cycle of fear and resignation. Pierre, a knight of Ziltonia who is initially assigned as Mia's escort, is secretly a loyal follower of Fernando, acting as a crucial link between the confined prince and the outside world. His relationship with the former saint, Philia Adenauer, is minimal; they met only once when she gave him the effective medicine he later abandoned, but he held her in high regard.

Fernando undergoes significant personal development. His arc is one of emerging from a self-imposed prison of fear and inadequacy. After hiding for so long, he decides to reclaim his agency. This transformation is first publicly demonstrated when he unexpectedly appears at a defense meeting, shocking Julius and the nobles. He asserts his position as the first prince and begins to challenge his brother's decisions directly. He later plays a crucial part in exposing Julius's plot to assassinate the king and him during a banquet. Having been tipped off, he feigns being poisoned, only to reveal he is fine, thereby cornering Julius and proving his treason in front of the entire court. By the end of this confrontation, he is entrusted by his father with the battle command against an incoming monster threat, showing his complete transition from a sidelined invalid to a decisive leader.

Regarding his notable abilities, Fernando is not noted for physical combat skills or magical powers. His primary strength lies in his strategic intellect and political cunning. He is able to outmaneuver Julius by anticipating his emotional reactions and setting traps for him, such as deliberately provoking him at the defense meeting to get his way. His most significant act is his successful counter to Julius's coup, a testament to his ability to plan and execute a complex political operation from a position of seeming weakness. His personal courage, born from Mia's encouragement, proves to be his most formidable asset.
