Description
Berkanan is introduced as a young woman who meets a tragic end before her story truly begins. When the adventuring party led by Iarumas discovers a corpse in the wireframe dungeon, the body is so badly burned by fire that it resembles a piece of charcoal. Raraja insists on dragging the remains out of the dungeon, and through the use of resurrection magic, Berkanan is given a second chance at life.

Physically, Berkanan is notable for her large and tall frame, standing a full head taller than most other characters around her. She is described as having big eyes, and her build includes large muscles as well as other prominent physical characteristics. Her demeanor is initially marked by a severe lack of confidence, and she speaks with a speech impediment that contributes to her difficulties with social interaction. As a fledgling mage, her magical abilities are inadequate and underdeveloped, to the point where her practical skills do not match the training she has supposedly received.

Despite her low self-worth and limited power, Berkanan possesses a serious and determined goal. She is driven by a burning desire to kill the red dragon that slaughtered her original adventuring party. This dragon is an interloper that has come up from the lower levels of the dungeon, and its ferocity has made it so notorious that even the most seasoned and experienced parties refuse to engage it in battle. Her motivation stems from a combination of raw anger over her own death and the loss of her companions, as well as a desperate need to prove her own value and capability. The fact that she was the only member of her original party to be resurrected likely adds to her psychological burden.

Berkanan serves as a central figure in the narrative arc that involves hunting the red dragon. She joins Iarumas's party, which includes the enigmatic warrior Iarumas, the feral Garbage, and the rogue Raraja, who agree to aid her in her quest. Her role is that of a character who is critically undertrained for the task she has set for herself, making her journey one of survival and growth against overwhelming odds. Her interactions with the party members, particularly Garbage and Raraja, are what drive the story forward and help to build her personality. Iarumas acts as a guiding and protective presence, while the support of the others helps her to strengthen her resolve. Over the course of the hunt, Berkanan undergoes significant character development, growing from a shy and stumbling individual with little confidence into a more resolved and capable person.

In terms of abilities, Berkanan is a mage, but her skills are initially portrayed as inadequate and she knows very little effective magic. Her training is apparently so lacking that she is said to know only one low-level spell. Her lack of combat ability is a defining trait early on, as she struggles to contribute effectively and is described as a mockery of the standard adventurer. Her growth throughout the story involves strengthening her resolve and gradually improving her capacity as a magic user, moving from a state of incompetence to one of greater determination and skill.
