Description
Iarumas is the central protagonist of the dark fantasy narrative, a man whose very existence is an anomaly. His story begins when he is discovered as a desiccated corpse in an unexplored area deep within a treacherous dungeon, a location where no human remains should have been found. After being resurrected, he was returned to life with no memories of his past or the circumstances of his death, leaving him as an amnesiac adrift in a world he no longer understands.
Personality-wise, Iarumas is defined by a cold, utilitarian, and detached demeanor. He is widely scorned by the living community of adventurers, who view him with a mixture of grudging respect for his skills and open disdain for his morbid occupation. He is derisively nicknamed Iarumas the corpse-hauler because he makes a living by delving into the dungeon to retrieve the bodies of fallen adventurers for a finder's fee. This work has left him deeply jaded; he is indifferent to misfortune, both his own and that of others, and he prefers the company of the dead to the living. His internal world is hard-boiled and darkly sarcastic, and he is often described as a conniving prick or an ass with a strange charm to back up his prickly nature. He is not inherently evil, but he is pragmatic to a fault, refusing to lift a finger unless absolutely necessary. This extends even to his living habits, as he prefers to sleep on the cold, hard floor, claiming that a comfortable bed makes him feel old and that the scent of death is deeply ingrained in who he is.
The primary motivation driving Iarumas is the desperate need to uncover his lost identity. He scours the dungeon not merely for profit but for clues to his past, hoping to find evidence of who he once was or perhaps other corpses from his era. His work as a retriever is a means to fund these expeditions and keep him close to the environment where his past lies buried. Though he initially acts out of self-interest, his rigid loner existence is disrupted when he encounters Garbage, a feral young swordswoman and the sole survivor of a massacred party. Unlike the others who keep their distance, Garbage, who communicates largely through growls and barks, becomes inexplicably attached to him and begins to follow him everywhere. This encounter marks a shift in his role; he transitions from a solitary corpse collector to a reluctant leader and mentor to a ragtag group that includes Garbage and later Raraja, an inexperienced thief abandoned by his clan.
Regarding his key relationships, the bond with Garbage is the most transformative. Despite her wild nature and lack of conventional speech, she becomes a formidable ally whose skills as a swordswoman complement his own. He also interacts with Sister Ainikki, an elf priestess at the local temple who handles the resurrection rites for the bodies he brings in, offering him a base of operations and a semblance of routine. The narrative follows his development as he is reluctantly pulled out of his isolation. While he begins as a figure who consorts only with the dead, his journey alongside Garbage and Raraja forces him to engage with the living again, building a party that ventures deeper into the dungeon than he ever could alone.
In terms of notable abilities, Iarumas is a highly skilled combatant, operating as a dual-class adventurer proficient with both the blade and high-level magic. His skills are sufficient to earn him grudging respect even from those who despise him. His long experience steeped in the ways of dungeon life grants him exceptional survival instincts, caution, and rigorous knowledge of the dungeon's traps, monsters, and ecology. He is not just a fighter; he is a survivor who navigates the deadly labyrinth with the grim efficiency of someone who has already died once and has no intention of doing so permanently.
