Description
Garp Goemon is a male demon student at Babyls School for Demons, belonging to the same abnormal class as the protagonist, Iruma Suzuki. He is easily recognized by his unusual appearance, as his entire head is covered in thick, deep silver hair that gives him the look of a straw doll, often sporting a single ahoge or cowlick. He carries a sword at his waist, reinforcing his image as a traditional warrior. His age is seventeen, his height is 173 centimeters, and he weighs 65 kilograms.
Garp's personality is defined by his profound kindness and a strong sense of chivalry. He is extremely helpful and cannot ignore anyone in need, a trait that often drives his actions. His manner of speaking is very formal and polite, reflecting his disciplined upbringing; he refers to himself as sessha, a humble old-fashioned term, and often ends his sentences with gozaru. He treats others with great respect, frequently using the honorific dono. While he is generally gentle and cooperative, he does have a desire to be popular and can become irritated if he feels excluded. His most significant personal ambition is to make one hundred friends.
The Garp family runs a dojo, and Garp carries himself with the honor and discipline of a samurai. His family has a deep and tragic secret. Long ago, the Garp ancestors were born with faces so terrifyingly hideous that even other demons would be driven insane just by looking at them. This fearsome trait allowed them to survive in the brutal, survival-of-the-fittest nature of the demon world, but it also left them isolated and lonely. Taking pity on them, the demon god Harpnas granted the family the dense silver fur to conceal their faces forever, as well as the ability to control the wind. Since then, the Garp family has strictly adhered to a rule never to reveal their true faces.
Garp's most important relationship is with his classmate, Agares Picero. He is one of the few people who can tolerate and motivate the extremely lazy Agares, and they are frequently seen together. Agares often expresses exasperation with Garp's boundless energy and insistence on helping strangers, but their bond is very strong and they form an effective team. Garp is also friends with other members of the abnormal class, including Lied Shax and Jazz Andro M., and is on good terms with Iruma and his friends. Clara Valac affectionately nicknames him Goegoe.
Throughout the story, Garp participates in several major school events, consistently demonstrating his helpful nature. During the Harvest Festival, he teams up with Agares, who uses his magic to build a massive castle as a base. Despite Agares wanting to keep the castle to themselves, Garp's instinct is to invite many other struggling students inside to take refuge, which ultimately benefits both of their scores. In the subsequent Heartbreaker exam, however, an accident occurs. While trying to mediate an argument between his teammates, Garp's pent-up frustration causes him to lose control, and he accidentally reveals his frightening true face. The sight is so psychologically traumatic that it causes his teammates to faint, resulting in their immediate elimination from the exam.
This incident plunges Garp into a deep depression. Filled with guilt and shame for harming others, he takes a break from school and isolates himself at home. His recovery is due almost entirely to the unwavering support of his friends, particularly Agares. Agares comes to his dojo, manages to bring him out, and makes a solemn promise to stop him if he ever loses control again. Realizing that his classmates and allies from the Harvest Festival are all worried about him, Garp is able to overcome his despair and return to school. This experience marks a significant point in his development, as he learns to accept his family's curse and trust in the strength of his growing bonds. He eventually achieves a Daleth rank (4), having started at Aleph (1).
Garp's notable abilities are tied to his family's hereditary magic. His primary power is called Wind Blade or Kamaitachi, which allows him to freely generate and manipulate sharp blades of wind. He can perform precise techniques like Wind Blade Kill for focused cutting attacks, and Rescue Gale to strike multiple foes without harming allies. In addition to his wind magic, he has also demonstrated proficiency in basic demonic spells, including La Fire to create flames and Gran to form defensive barriers. His physical training at the family dojo also makes him a capable combatant with his sword, even without magic.
