Description
Mei Ayazuki, a high school student from modern Tokyo, finds herself thrust into the Meiji era during a crimson full moon after joining magician Charlie's enigmatic magic show. This abrupt transition erases her memories, leaving only her name intact. She awakens disoriented in Hibiya Park, initially dismissing the horse-drawn carriages and period architecture as illusions until Charlie confirms her time travel.

Her appearance includes shoulder-length dark brown hair and striking golden or amber eyes. In modern Tokyo, she wears a school uniform: a white collared blouse with a red ribbon, navy blue blazer, and high-waisted plaid skirt, often accompanied by headphones. In the Meiji era, she adopts period attire—a cream and blue patterned kimono top, red hakama with floral accents, and a red hair bow.

Despite being ostracized in her own time for supernatural abilities, Mei maintains a friendly demeanor. She exhibits occasional airheadedness and clumsiness, especially when navigating Meiji-era customs and terminology, frequently relying on others for explanations. Her enormous appetite features roast beef as a favorite, and her innate kindness drives her to assist others, including spirits, even at personal risk.

As a "tamayori," Mei sees and interacts with spirits and ghosts—a trait shared with figures like Kyouka Izumi and Tousuke Iwasaki. This ability stems from her childhood in her family’s antique shop, where she communed with spirits inhabiting objects. In the Meiji era, where spirits are openly acknowledged, this skill lets her resolve spirit-related issues affecting historical figures.

Her background involves frequenting that antique shop, which nurtured her spirit connection, and having a younger sister. Across adaptations like *Meiji Tokyo Renka: Haikara Date* and *Full Moon*, her core journey remains: arriving in the Meiji era, losing memories, adapting to her situation, and interacting with historical figures at locations like the Rokumeikan hall. Narrative variations exist—the live-action series places her awakening in a church, while the anime introduces an early fox-spirit incident at the Rokumeikan, a plot point delayed in games. Player choices in games dictate her romantic path.

Her story involves adapting to Meiji life, using tamayori abilities to aid historical figures, and building relationships. While awaiting the next full moon for a potential return home, she confronts decisions about staying in the past. Her name’s etymology reflects her character: "Mei" (芽衣) blends "bud/sprout" (芽) and "clothing" (衣), while "Ayazuki" (綾月) combines "design" (綾) and "moon" (月). Players may rename her in games.

*Meiji Tokyo Renka Movie 2: Hanakagami no Fantasia* continues her narrative after the first film (*Yumihari no Serenade*), focusing on her Meiji-era experiences and relationships within the franchise.
