Description
Matthew Hisman, known in the original Japanese as Toshio Utsumi, is the male protagonist of the Cat's Eye series. He works as a police detective in the Inukami Police Department's Anti-Cat's Eyes Division, a role he dreamed of since high school. After graduating from the police academy, he was assigned to a station in the heart of Tokyo. Hisman is the high school sweetheart of Hitomi Kisugi and regularly visits the café she runs with her sisters, remaining completely unaware that she is one of the art thieves he is trying to capture. He is characterized by a determined and persistent nature, though he is somewhat clumsy and not particularly skilled at finding clues. His dogged resolve has impressed his superiors. He is also stubborn and often engages in verbal arguments with his chief. Hisman does not carry a gun, preferring to rely on his wits and his fists when confronting criminals. He has a weakness for attractive women, which frequently makes Hitomi jealous. His primary motivation is to capture the thief known as Cat's Eye, a goal he has tied to his personal life: he has vowed not to marry Hitomi until he successfully arrests Cat's Eye, although he has already proposed to her. This promise creates a central tension in his relationship with Hitomi, as she is the very thief he pursues. Over the course of the story, Hisman develops from a bumbling but earnest officer into someone willing to sacrifice his career for his personal convictions. After Hitomi reveals her identity as a member of Cat's Eye and flees to the United States, he resigns from the police force to follow her. He finds that she has lost her memory due to viral meningitis, and he spends time with her until her memories return, allowing their relationship to rekindle. This journey demonstrates his deep loyalty and capacity for personal growth beyond his professional ambitions. Notable abilities include his physical combat skills, his tenacity in investigations despite limited natural talent, and his ability to earn the respect of his colleagues through sheer persistence.
