Description
Osamu Mob, commonly referred to as Mobuo in the anime Kaya-chan Isn't Scary, is a supporting character whose background is rooted in personal tragedy and a subsequent encounter with the supernatural. He is a middle-aged man of stout build with black hair cut to ear length and thick glasses that obscure his eyes. By profession, he is a self-proclaimed occult writer and claims to possess psychic abilities. Before the events of the series, Mobuo experienced the loss of his daughter, an event that profoundly altered his personality and left him with a deeply eccentric and obsessive demeanor. His life changed when he was saved by Kaya Sato, the young protagonist, during a supernatural incident. This rescue inspired in him a powerful sense of gratitude that shapes his every action. His primary motivation is to watch over and protect Kaya from the shadows, though his method of doing so makes him appear suspicious and dangerously close to a stalker. In the story, Mobuo serves as an ambiguous ally who provides occasional assistance or information from behind the scenes, often following Kaya at a distance and intervening only when he believes it is necessary. His relationship with Kaya is built entirely on his indebtedness to her; he holds her in high regard and feels compelled to repay the debt he owes. He also interacts with other characters such as Chie Hasumi, Kaya's teacher, though these interactions are often marked by his unsettling manner. Over the course of the series, Mobuo develops from a one-dimensional obsessive figure into a more sympathetic character as his tragic backstory and genuine, albeit misguided, altruism are revealed. His notable abilities include his claimed psychic sensitivity and his knowledge of the occult, which he applies in his writing and in his efforts to monitor Kaya. While his powers are not depicted as being on the same level as Kaya's, his experience with supernatural matters allows him to recognize threats and understand the nature of the spirits that Kaya combats.
