Description
Arne Neuntöte is the central protagonist of the gothic horror mystery series, serving as a vampire detective who operates a private investigation office in the city of Rügenberg, a place where supernatural beings and humans coexist. Despite his youthful and somewhat childlike appearance, Arne is an ancient and immensely powerful being, known in some circles as the Worst Vampire, a title that ironically references his lazy, reclusive lifestyle rather than any lack of power.
Arne was not born but artificially created when nine of the most powerful vampire lords sacrificed their hearts to bring him into existence. However, following a certain incident in his past, he now possesses only one heart remaining, making him more vulnerable than in his prime. He resides in a grand castle within the supernatural realm, a place filled with numerous coffins where he prefers to sleep for extended periods. His personality is defined by a cold, analytical demeanor and a strict adherence to logic when solving cases, often dismissing human emotions as irrational and inefficient. This detached nature is coupled with a deep-seated laziness; Arne is a notorious NEET by choice who believes any expenditure of energy that does not lead to sleep is largely a waste, and he frequently complains about the effort required to leave his home.
Arne's primary role in the story is that of an investigator who takes on occult cases involving curses, monsters, and unexplained phenomena that ordinary authorities cannot handle. His motivations initially appear to be minimal, driven more by circumstance and a desire to resolve bothersome incidents so he can return to his slumber. However, his trajectory changes significantly when he encounters Lynn Reinweiß, a human noblewoman who stumbles into his world seeking answers about her family's dark secrets. Despite initially viewing her as a mere pawn or tool to assist in his work, Arne forms an unlikely partnership with her, accepting her as his assistant. Their relationship is built on a contract that binds their fates together through the solving of mysteries, and over time, Arne develops a deep, albeit hidden, protective bond with her, eventually coming to rely on her human intuition to navigate the social nuances of their investigations.
Key relationships define his existence beyond his partnership with Lynn. He is served by Nachzehrer, a loyal subordinate who lives within mirrors and acts as his caretaker, managing the logistics of the castle and his daily schedule to keep his master's life functional. He also shares a long and bitter rivalry with Zisye, another powerful supernatural entity who acts as a dark mirror to Arne. Zisye is volatile and manipulative, taking pleasure in provoking Arne and mocking his attachment to humans and his lazy habits. This antagonistic relationship represents a clash between Arne's detached logic and Zisye's more chaotic nature, with their history marked by intellectual sparring and violence.
Throughout the series, Arne undergoes subtle but significant development. He gradually adapts to having a human companion who challenges his detached perspective and forces him to engage more actively with the world. While he maintains his condescending attitude, he becomes increasingly fascinated by human emotions through Lynn, and his arc involves navigating the thin line between the human and non-human worlds while uncovering the truth behind his own past and the nature of his immortality. His cold exterior occasionally cracks to reveal a willingness to use his full power to protect those he considers under his care, particularly Lynn.
Regarding his notable abilities, Arne possesses a wide array of supernatural powers befitting a high-ranking vampire lord. His most distinctive ability is the manipulation of red blood energy, which he uses to solve cases and subdue his enemies. He also has the unique and somewhat grotesque power to detach his body parts, such as his hand, sending them to perform tasks or investigate areas remotely without needing to move his main body. Perhaps his most visually dramatic ability is his capacity to change his form; by swallowing a vial of blood, he can transform from his youthful appearance into an adult form where he becomes the most powerful vampire in the world, referred to as Arne Neuntöte. In addition to these physical powers, he is a master of logic and deduction, using his cold, analytical mind to solve cases that baffle others.
