Description
Chiaki Ōgaki is a central character in the story, known for her role as the energetic and boisterous head of her high school's Outdoor Activities Club. Born on August 31, her passion for camping has deep roots, stemming from a fond memory of camping with her family during her kindergarten years, which inspired her to want to share similar outdoor experiences with friends.
To pursue this goal, Chiaki co-founded the Outdoor Activities Club after entering high school, alongside her close friend Aoi Inuyama. Her personality is defined by a bright, playful, and action-oriented nature, often bringing high energy to any situation and initiating plans, even if she can be somewhat reckless or impulsive in her enthusiasm. This can sometimes lead to misadventures, such as failing at an attempt to make homemade sausages due to poor temperature control. Despite her energetic demeanor, she is practical, especially when it comes to the club's finances. The club operates on a limited budget, which makes Chiaki extremely budget-conscious; she is known to suffer a nosebleed at the mere thought of purchasing expensive camping gear and frequently devises ways to use low-cost equipment or scrap materials.
Within the club, Chiaki acts as a natural leader and a driving force of the group, often pushing for new adventures. Her key relationships include a deep friendship with Aoi, her co-founder and partner in lighthearted mischief, who she affectionately nicknames Inuko. She is also instrumental in recruiting new members. Initially reluctant to accept Nadeshiko Kagamihara due to the club's tiny room, Chiaki eventually welcomes her after learning that having four or more members would qualify them for a larger space. She also makes persistent efforts to recruit the solo-camper Rin Shima. While Rin finds her overbearing difficulty to deal with at first, their relationship gradually improves as Chiaki learns to respect Rin's preference for camping alone, and they eventually become good friends. To help fund the club's activities, Chiaki works part-time at a liquor store, a job that leads to her future club advisor, Minami Toba, becoming a regular customer.
Her physical abilities present a contrast to her lively spirit. While she is full of ideas and energy, her physical endurance is average for a high school girl, and she often finds herself worn out on long hikes or bike rides, struggling to keep up with the more athletic Nadeshiko or Rin. Similarly, her grades are implied to be relatively low within the group, struggling to pass exams. However, Chiaki shows development over the course of the story. After advancing to her second year of high school, she succeeds in recruiting a new member, Mei Nakatsugawa, which allows the club to be promoted from an informal circle to an official school club.
Her character journey extends beyond high school. In the film set ten years later, Chiaki has left a job at an event company in Tokyo to make a U-turn career shift back to Yamanashi Prefecture, where she works for the Tourism Promotion Organization. In this role, she takes charge of a major project to redevelop a closed facility into a campsite, once again bringing her old friends together. As an adult, she has developed a fondness for drinking after work at izakaya, earning her the nickname "Second Generation Gabu-nee" due to her similarity to her former teacher Minami Toba. Despite her grown-up responsibilities, she retains her impulsive streak, as shown when she drunkenly takes a taxi all the way from Nagoya back to Yamanashi, dragging Rin along with her to inspect the proposed camp location.
