Description
Garou is a character from the light novel, manga, and anime series known in English as Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Trusted Companions Tried to Kill Me, but Thanks to the Gift of an Unlimited Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out for Revenge on My Former Party Members and the World. In the story, he is primarily known as a warrior hailing from the beastman tribe. His physical appearance is that of a wolf man, and he fights using his natural claws as his primary weapons. His level is established to be 151, indicating a respectable degree of personal combat power within the world's early power scaling, though it is ultimately far surpassed by the series protagonist and his new allies.

Garou is a core member of the adventuring party known as the Concord of the Tribes, a group ostensibly formed to fight against the discrimination faced by humans but which secretly exists to monitor individuals who might become a "Master," a being with the power to overturn the world order. Within this party, he serves alongside members of other races, including the dragonute Drago, the elf Sasha, the dark elf Sionne, the dwarf Naano, the centaur Santor, the ghoul Oboro, and the demon Diablo.

The central event that defines Garou's role in the narrative revolves around the betrayal of the human protagonist, Light. After determining that Light is not a "Master" and therefore not an asset, the Concord of the Tribes decides to eliminate him. During the expedition into the world's most dangerous dungeon, the Abyss, the party abandons Light. It is Garou who is specifically ordered by the party leader, Drago, to deliver the final, killing blow to the helpless Light. However, before Garou can complete this act, Light accidentally activates a teleportation trap, escaping to the deepest part of the dungeon.

Garou's personality is marked by a sharp contrast between his public persona and his true nature. Following the incident in the dungeon, Light is presumed dead, and Garou rises in prominence and popularity, particularly among his own beastman tribe. He enjoys a life of wealth, power, and respect, living luxuriously as the world believes him to be a hero. The description of his life during this period is one of ease, as he has attained everything he seemingly desired.

However, this high standing is a veneer. In reality, Garou is a coward at heart. His primary motivation is self-preservation, and he is characterized by a willingness to betray his own allies and friends if it means he can save his own skin. This cowardly nature stands in stark opposition to his fearsome image as a wolf warrior. His motivations are not rooted in grand ideals or loyalty but in the basic, selfish desire to survive and prosper. This makes him a fundamentally untrustworthy individual who will turn on anyone when the situation grows dire. He also lacks critical information about the Concord of the Tribes' true mission or the nature of the "Master," indicating he was not a deeply trusted figure within the group's inner circle but rather a tool used for his combat ability.

In the unfolding plot of revenge, Garou serves as the first major target for Light after his three-year training in the Abyss. Having returned to the surface with overwhelming power and his new, level 9999 allies, Light makes Garou his primary target for retribution. Multiple sources confirm that Garou is "dispatched," "defeated," and "captured" by Light early in his campaign of vengeance. He does not put up a meaningful fight against Light's newfound power, and his fate is sealed quickly. The narrative uses Garou's capture and defeat as the opening salvo in Light's systematic destruction of his former party members.

As a result, Garou experiences almost no positive development; his arc is one of a downfall. He goes from living the high life as a beloved, powerful figure among his people to being utterly crushed by the very person he tried to murder. His final fate is one of complete ruin. He is left in a state of agony and misery, fully aware that his own people are now doomed because of the monster they helped to create when they decided to betray Light. His story acts as a cautionary tale within the series' revenge-driven plot, demonstrating that actions have severe consequences.
