Description
Kyōko Nekozuku is a character from the anime Dekin no Mogura: The Earthbound Mole, adapted from the manga by Natsumi Eguchi. She is the wife of Tōshirō Nekozuku, a university professor and head of a family of exorcists, and the mother of their son Kyōshirō Nekozuku, a high school student training to become an exorcist. Kyōko is depicted as a warm and cheerful woman in her late thirties, characterized by an unwavering optimism and a nurturing disposition that extends not only to her family but also to those who seek her help.

Despite not possessing the natural spiritual awareness or exorcist abilities that run in her husband’s bloodline, Kyōko has a unique gift of her own: she can occasionally glimpse fragments of other people’s futures. This ability is not something she actively controls, but it manifests during moments of emotional intensity or when someone close to her is in need. Rather than using it for personal gain, she employs her glimpses in a gentle, informal manner, often offering reassuring advice or subtle warnings. Her fortune-telling is notably featured in a story arc in which a distressed housewife named Sakurako Konosaka bursts into the Nekozuku home seeking guidance, and Kyōko—with the indirect help of spirits—helps her voice long-suppressed frustrations.

Her primary motivation stems from her deep love for her husband and son. Both Tōshirō and Kyōshirō are perpetually undernourished because their bodies are partially drained by the supernatural cats (bakeneko) that have formed symbiotic bonds with them. Kyōko’s response is to constantly prepare enormous portions of food—oversized bento boxes, massive homemade snacks, and hearty meals—in a tireless effort to keep them healthy. This culinary devotion is a central expression of her role in the household, and she approaches it with cheerful persistence, never letting her own lack of physical strength or psychic power discourage her.

In the story, Kyōko occupies a supportive and grounding role within the Nekozuku family. She is not directly involved in the main supernatural conflicts that the protagonist Mogura and the other characters face; instead, she serves as a stabilizing presence, offering emotional warmth and a sense of normal domestic life amidst the bizarre events that surround her family. Her relationship with her son Kyōshirō is affectionate but often comedic, as his serious and somewhat neurotic personality contrasts with her carefree demeanor, while her bond with her husband Tōshirō is one of mutual fondness, with Kyōko’s evident adoration for him frequently noted in the series.

Over the course of the narrative, Kyōko does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, but her role reinforces the theme that even those without supernatural gifts can contribute meaningfully to the lives of those who possess them. Her unwavering support, intuitive kindness, and quiet resilience make her an integral part of the family dynamic, and her fortune-telling ability occasionally serves as a subtle catalyst for change in others. Her notable abilities, therefore, are her gentle foresight and her almost superhuman capacity for unconditional care—both of which define her place in the world of Dekin no Mogura: The Earthbound Mole.
