Description
Dr. Hiroshi Agasa is a confirmed character in the cast of the anime film Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback. He is an inventor and a long-time neighbor of the Kudo family, residing in a large house next door to them in Tokyo. He is among the very first people to learn that the child known as Conan Edogawa is actually the teenage detective Shinichi Kudo, who was shrunk by a mysterious poison.
As an inventor, Dr. Agasa possesses a high degree of intelligence and has earned a doctorate in engineering. He proudly, if somewhat humbly, refers to himself as a genius inventor. While some of his creations are eccentric or even failures that occasionally cause small explosions in his home laboratory, he is also responsible for designing and building many practical and highly sophisticated devices. These include Conan's signature gadgets, such as the voice-changing bow tie, the power-enhancing kick shoes, the tranquilizer dart watch, and the solar-powered skateboard. He also created the detective badges and flashlight-watches used by the Detective Boys, the group of young classmates that Conan joins.
Personality-wise, Dr. Agasa is a jovial, kind, and paternal figure. Despite being a bachelor, he is very caring and enjoys the company of children, frequently taking Conan, Ai Haibara, and the other members of the Detective Boys on trips in his distinctive, somewhat unreliable yellow Volkswagen Beetle. He is outgoing and maintains many friendships within his community, which has helped him provide cover stories for the true origins of Conan and Haibara. One of his well-known quirks is a fondness for telling riddles, often of the pun-filled or deliberately unfunny variety, which he frequently presents at the end of the theatrical films. He also has a strong personal affection for pasta and tomato juice.
Dr. Agasa's motivation is rooted in his loyalty and protective instincts toward his neighbors and friends, particularly Shinichi Kudo. When Shinichi is transformed into Conan, Agasa becomes an invaluable ally and confidant. Recognizing the danger posed by the Black Organization that poisoned Shinichi, Agasa advises him to conceal his identity and helps him establish a new life as Conan Edogawa, even arranging for him to live with detective Kogoro Mori to gather information on the case. His role extends to being a strategic advisor, as Conan often turns to him for help in critical moments and to plan countermeasures against the Black Organization.
Key relationships define Dr. Agasa's role in the story. His bond with Conan is one of profound trust and mutual respect, with Agasa being one of the few people who knows Conan's secret. This trust extends to Conan's parents, Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, who entrust their son's safety to him. Another crucial relationship is with Ai Haibara, the former Black Organization member Shiho Miyano, who also was shrunk by the same poison. Agasa finds her collapsed near his home, takes her in, and gives her the name Ai Haibara, becoming her guardian and protector. A significant part of his personal history involves a romantic thread: a poignant, unfulfilled love story with his childhood friend Fusae Campbell Kinoshita, centered on a promise made under a gingko tree.
Physically, Dr. Agasa is a man of average height with a slightly overweight frame. He is bald on the top of his head, with the remaining hair being silver. He sports thick eyebrows, a mustache, a somewhat large and bulbous nose, and is almost always depicted wearing round-rimmed glasses and often a white lab coat over his casual clothes. Over the course of the series, he remains a stable and unwavering source of support, known for his intelligence, his eccentric but effective inventions, and his deep, paternal care for the young people whose lives have been turned upside down by the Black Organization.
