Description
Henri is a young man from a town where magic users are strictly divided into the celebrated white witches and the feared black witches. His appearance and easy manner immediately set him apart from the fearful townspeople. While others shun Luna, a black witch whose poisonous touch is lethal, Henri is kind and open-minded, approaching her without the usual flinching or revulsion. Described as having a personality reminiscent of a golden retriever, he is the first person to see beyond her dangerous powers and treat her simply as another person. This simple act of kindness becomes the catalyst for a significant, though tragic, chapter in Luna's life.

Driven by a genuine curiosity and lack of prejudice, Henri becomes the object of Luna's first love. Despite the risk of a fatal touch, he engages with her in a unique way. Using a magical method, Luna creates a sentient drawing of Henri on paper, and through this sepia-toned avatar, the two can safely meet and interact. Through these nightly escapades, he and Luna fall in love, forming a deep emotional bond even though they can never physically touch. For Henri, this is not a mere dalliance; he is identified as a womanizer by some, yet he willingly risks his life for his time with Luna, demonstrating a sincerity that transcends his reputation.

Henri’s role in the story is primarily that of a romantic false lead and a key figure from Luna’s past. His presence highlights the central tragedy of Luna’s existence: her desire for human connection is constantly thwarted by her deadly nature and the systemic hatred of black witches. The relationship cannot last, as his proximity to her poison begins to sicken him. To save his life, Luna is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice, erasing all his memories of her and their love. Even without these memories, the experience fundamentally changes him. He grows into a man who rails against the injustice faced by black witches, motivated by a lingering sense of compassion he cannot explain. He later reappears in the story as a white witch, or closely related to them, who acts in secret to help Luna and others, using his position and knowledge to shelter them from harm.

Important relationships define his character. His bond with Luna is the most significant, a pure first love that is both beautiful and heartbreaking. It is revealed that he is a relative of the enigmatic Bird Magician, a figure who exists in a gray area between the white and black factions. This connection suggests Henri himself operates on the fringes of the rigid magical hierarchy. In a later reunion, he is shown to be married with a child, a development that underscores the finality of his lost past with Luna and the forward march of time for everyone but the long-lived witch. He remains a kind and brave person, willing to help Luna when she is in danger, even if he no longer consciously remembers why she is so important to him.

While he has no overt magical abilities of his own, his significance is purely emotional and narrative. His defining characteristic is his lack of magical power, which makes his willingness to get close to Luna all the more courageous. His development is one of influence rather than action; having once touched Luna’s life, he carries the positive effect of that encounter into his future, becoming an unexpected ally. The most notable ability associated with him is not his own, but the magical drawing that served as his avatar during his romance with Luna, allowing him to exist as a safe, paper-thin version of himself in her presence.
