Description
The Cat Witch, whose name is Dorothy, is a witch-in-training introduced as a secondary character in the anime Champignon Witch. She is an apprentice under the Beast Magician, alongside the Mouse Magician and the Bat Magician, and first appears at the cottage of the main character, Luna, the Witch of Champignon.
In terms of personality, Dorothy is described as a tsundere, a trait that aligns with her cat-like nature. She initially attempts to bully Luna, motivated by resentment that Luna was promoted to a full witch quickly while she herself remains a trainee. Her teasing and hostile behavior, however, are consistently misinterpreted by the socially isolated Luna, who believes she has simply received kind visitors and responds with genuine warmth, offering tea and cookies. This persistent kindness and lack of guile gradually break down Dorothy’s defenses, and she comes to like and eventually love Luna.
Dorothy’s role in the story is closely tied to the world’s politics and Luna’s tragic fate. She and her charges are tasked with spying, presumably on the more privileged white witches. While exploring a white witch’s mansion, one of her cat charges disappears, and Dorothy is captured while trying to rescue it. As a black witch, she is denied justice and pays the ultimate price for this transgression, leading to her unjust death. This event is a key tragedy that deeply affects Luna.
Following her death, Dorothy’s story continues in a spectral form. Her spirit was set free because Luna’s unique purification magic cleansed all the negative energy attached to her unjust demise. In this ghostly state, she remains close to Luna, and it is through her spectral intervention at the Black Witch Council that a crucial event in the present narrative is made possible.
Regarding her notable abilities, Dorothy is strongly associated with felines and commands her cat charges. As a witch under the Beast Magician, her specific magical skills likely involve her animal companions and espionage. Her most significant power, however, is not one she wields herself but is a result of Luna’s magic, which purified her soul and allowed her spirit to continue to interact with the world. Prior to her death, her role in the human world is as an outcast, no better liked than Luna, which provides the context for her initial jealousy and eventual bond with the kind-hearted black witch.
