Description
Capella Emerada Lugunica is a major antagonist in the narrative, serving as the Sin Archbishop of Lust within the Witch Cult. Her role is that of a high-ranking officer in this malevolent organization, embodying the deadly sin of lust with a particularly cruel and disturbing philosophy. Her background is shrouded in mystery and deliberate falsehood. She claims the name of Emerada Lugunica, a princess of the now-defunct Lugunican royal family who was recorded to have died over fifty years before the main events of the story. Historical accounts describe this princess as beautiful and intelligent but also exceptionally cruel, possessing an immeasurable darkness, and the populace despised her to the extent that she was not granted a state funeral. Capella possesses the physical traits of the royal family, namely golden hair and red eyes, and claims to carry the Dragon Blood that symbolizes the royal line, leaving her true identity—whether she is the original princess, a successor, or an impostor—a deliberate enigma.
Capella's personality is widely considered among the most despicable and loathsome of all the Witch Cult's archbishops. She is a verbose, crude, and sadistic individual who views all people other than herself as mere "bags of meat" or "trash". Her entire worldview is built upon a twisted and extreme philosophy regarding love and attraction. She self-identifies as a "universally loving" person who seeks to monopolize all the love and admiration in the world, but her understanding of love is purely carnal. She believes that all human affection is nothing more than disguised sexual desire, and that claims of loving someone for their personality or inner self are hypocritical falsehoods. Consequently, her primary motivation is not to be genuinely loved, but to force the entire world to adore her while simultaneously degrading their dignity. She derives pleasure from exposing what she sees as the ugly truth of human desire, reveling in the suffering and humiliation of those she torments. She is a pathological liar who uses her powers to create scenarios that demonstrate her cynical beliefs, often demanding of her victims whether they could still love someone after she has transformed them into a hideous monster.
Pivotal to her role in the story and her abilities are her powers derived from the Witch Factor of Lust. This authority grants her two primary abilities: Variation and Change. Variation allows her to transform her own body at will. She can alter her shape from a small girl to a massive, powerful black dragon capable of flight and spewing destructive black flames, or any other form she desires. This ability also grants her an extraordinary regenerative capacity, allowing her to instantly reform from wounds that would be fatal to others, leading her to proclaim herself immortal, though attacks that target the soul may be an exception. Change allows her to forcibly transform other living beings. She uses this power with horrific cruelty, reshaping people into giant flies, lumps of unrecognizable flesh, or small, helpless creatures. Crucially, these victims retain their consciousness and sense of self, trapping them in an endless nightmare from which they cannot escape, effectively serving as a form of eternal torture. Her secondary notable ability comes from her corrupted Dragon Blood, which she can pour onto others. While it may heal wounds, it also inflicts a terrible curse that covers the victim in painful black veins and corrupts their body, as done to Crusch Karsten and Natsuki Subaru. She is also the leader of a powerful assassination organization, known to its members as Mother. In this capacity, she employs individuals like Elsa Granhiert and Meili Portroute as her children, sending them on missions and punishing failures with cruel transformations, such as turning Meili into a swarm of frogs.
In the main storyline, Capella plays a central role as an antagonist during the attack on the city of Pristella. She occupies City Hall and turns the hostages and guards into grotesque monsters. During the battle, she confronts a group including Subaru Natsuki and Crusch Karsten. After a deceptive fight where she mimics a dragon, she severely wounds Subaru's leg and then pours her cursed Dragon Blood onto both him and Crusch, leaving the latter in a near-catatonic state wracked with pain. Throughout this encounter, she verbally assaults her enemies, mocking their values and espousing her philosophy of love. She later engages in combat with Ferris and Al, displaying her cunning nature. While she is eventually forced to retreat from the city, she is not defeated or killed, remaining a persistent and elusive threat. Her development in the story is minimal, as she is a static force of pure villainy, but her backstory hints at a deep psychological trauma that created her monstrous philosophy, and her connections to the royal family and the assassins suggest a long and complex history of manipulation and evil that remains partly unexplored.
