TV-Series
Description
Lye Batenkaitos is a Sin Archbishop of the Witch Cult, representing the Gourmet aspect of Gluttony. He first appears in the interludes of Arc 3 and becomes a major antagonist in Arc 5 and one of the main antagonists of Arc 6, acting alongside his brother Roy Alphard and sister Louis Arneb. Physically, Lye is short in stature with long, unkempt chestnut-brown hair that reaches his knees. His presence is unsettling, and his speech is often fragmented, carrying a multi-voiced quality that reflects his fractured sense of self.
Lye's personality is defined by a cold, calculating cruelty and an insatiable hunger for the names and memories of others. He treats the consumption of a person's identity as a form of fine dining, taking pleasure in the unique flavors of different lives, talents, and relationships. He is not driven by ideology or loyalty to the Witch Cult so much as by his own endless appetite for experience and skill. This makes him patient and methodical when hunting prey, but also prone to arrogance when he believes he has the upper hand.
His primary motivation is the pursuit of exquisite flavors derived from devouring the names and memories of exceptional individuals. By consuming a person's name and memories, he erases them from the world's recognition: no one will remember them, and their deeds are attributed to others. He does this not out of malice alone, but because he genuinely experiences their lives as nourishment. This drive leads him to target powerful figures and those with unique talents, as he craves the richness of their experiences.
In the story, Lye serves as an existential threat whose actions have lasting psychological consequences for the main cast. He is directly responsible for erasing Rem's name and memories, a wound that persists throughout the series. In Arc 5, he participates in the assault on the Watergate City of Pristella, and in Arc 6 he becomes a central antagonist during the expedition to the Pleiades Watchtower, where his abilities are pushed to their limit. His role is not merely that of a brute force villain, but a character who weaponizes identity loss itself.
Lye's key relationships are defined by his role in the Gluttony trio. He works closely with Roy Alphard, who shares his Authority, and Louis Arneb, whose more passive and observational nature contrasts with his active consumption. He also has a significant adversarial relationship with Ram. During the battle at the Pleiades Watchtower, Ram's fierce hatred for Lye, born from her sister Rem's erasure, drives her to fight him despite lacking her original horn. This confrontation forces Lye to adapt and overcome his own limitations, leading to his most significant development.
His development centers on his initial aversion to using Solar Eclipse, the aspect of his Authority that allows him to physically transform into those he has consumed. He feared that morphing into others would cause him to lose his own sense of self. However, after being cornered by Ram, he is forced to use it to escape death by transforming into Dorkell. He discovers a way to retain his identity while using the form, and from that point onward he freely employs both Solar and Lunar Eclipse, making him a far more versatile and dangerous combatant.
Lye's notable abilities stem from his Authority of Gluttony. He can consume a person's name and memories by touching them with his left hand, licking his palm, and chanting their full name. If he consumes a false name, he experiences severe nausea and regurgitates it. His Authority has two advanced techniques: Lunar Eclipse and Solar Eclipse. Lunar Eclipse allows him to access and skillfully use the memories and abilities of those he has consumed, including martial arts and combat techniques, though he cannot use Divine Protections, Spirit Arts, or other Authorities this way. He can synthesize different memories to create hybrid super-class techniques. Solar Eclipse enables him to physically transform into a person he has consumed, granting him their physiological advantages for a given technique. Additionally, because the Witch Factors of Gluttony were once possessed by the Witch of Gluttony Daphne, Lye has the ability to command and direct Demon Beasts, a power he uses to coordinate attacks and travel quickly through dangerous regions. Despite his power, he meets his end at the Pleiades Watchtower, where he is decapitated by Ram in a battle that pushes both of them beyond their limits.
