Description
Ponta is a small spirit beast of the species Ventu-Vulpis, commonly called a Cottontail Fox or Fluffy Fox, and she serves as the constant companion of the protagonist Arc. She has soft green fur, a rounded fluffy body, and a tail that flares into several tufts resembling a dandelion seed head. A thin membrane between her limbs allows her to glide through the air like a flying squirrel, and she has a natural affinity for wind magic, which she uses to assist with travel, scouting, and combat. As a spirit beast, she belongs to a rare and magical category of creatures that is deeply revered by the elven people, and members of her species rarely form bonds with humans or other outsiders.

Arc encounters Ponta early in his travels while exploring a forest. In the original story, she had been captured and wounded by human bandits, but in the anime adaptation she is found alone in the wild after being injured by a Giant Basilisk. In both versions, Arc heals her with his high-level magic, and she chooses to remain with him afterward. Arc gives her the name Ponta, and from that point she becomes his loyal traveling partner. She is most often seen perched on top of his helmet or riding at his side as the group journeys across the world.

In terms of personality, Ponta is playful, affectionate, and notably intelligent. She is also a well-known glutton, frequently begging Arc for treats and showing great interest in any new food that catches her attention, sometimes letting her appetite override her natural caution. She is naturally wary of unfamiliar beings, but once she comes to trust someone, she is obedient and devoted. Compared with others of her kind, she is exceptionally friendly and sociable, with a particular fondness for fruits and nuts. Her motivations are largely driven by companionship, comfort, and food, and her strong attachment to Arc is the central force that keeps her at his side.

Ponta plays an important role in the story that goes beyond being a cute mascot. Since spirit beasts rarely bond with anyone, her willingness to travel with Arc becomes a meaningful signal to the people they meet. Seeing Ponta with him reassures wary elves and other characters that Arc is trustworthy or at least not an enemy, which helps him build alliances and gain access to elven communities. She accompanies Arc during battles and explorations, supports him with her ability to glide and her wind magic, and even helps maintain his disguises, such as when she posed as part of a decoration while Arc pretended to be an empty suit of armor.

Her most significant relationship is with Arc, based on mutual trust, loyalty, and constant companionship. She also travels alongside his allies, including the elf warrior Ariane and the beast-person ninja Chiyome, and is warmly regarded by the elves who revere spirit beasts. Over the course of the story, Ponta grows more comfortable and spoiled in her life with Arc. In the original web novel, she becomes noticeably overweight by the end because of constant snacking and her habit of riding on Arc's head instead of moving on her own, and she loses the ability to fly with her wind magic. Her companions then realize how much they have spoiled her and work to help her regain her former shape through a strict diet and training regimen, much to her displeasure. In terms of gender, Ponta is identified as female in the web novel and the anime adaptation, while the light novels leave the matter ambiguous.
