Description
Nozoki Byōbu is a tsukumogami, a spirit that awakened from an old folding screen placed in the annex of the young master Ichitarō’s residence. He appears as a tall, slender male with black hair cut to ear length and green eyes. He dresses in a loose-fitting kimono patterned with a flashy ishidatami (stone-pavement) motif. His personality is marked by a sharp, cynical tongue and a sarcastic demeanor, which often leads to him being scolded by the two elder attendants, Nikichi and Sasuke. Despite his biting remarks, he harbors a genuine, if understated, care for the young master and serves as a good-natured playmate. His primary motivation is to keep Ichitarō company and indulge his own curiosity, often peering over the screen to observe events or stir up mild mischief. In the story, Nozoki Byōbu functions as a supporting supernatural companion, providing levity through his dry wit while occasionally offering cryptic insights that aid in the resolution of mysteries. His key relationships are with Ichitarō, whom he teases but also protects, and with Nikichi and Sasuke, who act as disciplinarians. His development is subtle, growing from a purely detached observer into a more engaged and slightly softer presence around the household. As a tsukumogami, his notable abilities include the power to materialize from his screen form, stretch his body to unnatural heights, and possibly see beyond physical barriers, though he primarily uses these talents for playful eavesdropping or to surprise the humans.
