Description
Ponko is a young female tanuki alien who arrives on Earth with her family: her father Bumbuko, her mother Mami, her younger brother Fuguri, and her grandmother Mujina. The family fled their home planet, which they temporarily call Tanuki Star, after large-scale territorial conflicts and war broke out there. The name of their home world is a provisional label they chose because of its resemblance to the raccoon dog, a creature found on Earth. After their spaceship is damaged, the family takes shelter at the Gingarou Hotel in Ginza while repairs are made, and although they initially intend to leave once the ship is fixed, they eventually settle on Earth and live in their converted vessel. Ponko herself becomes an employee of the hotel, a role she continues to hold across the long lifespan of her species.

Ponko's personality is defined by strong curiosity and a warm, sociable nature. She is fascinated by the unfamiliar world around her and delights in discovering new things, especially together with the people she cares about. She is deeply devoted to her family and acts as a caring older sister to her younger brother, while her more timid side tends to surface when she is confronted with surprises. A distinctive trait of hers is that she faints and enters a death-like state whenever something startles her, which can be inconvenient in everyday situations. In spite of this sensitivity, she is capable of summoning genuine bravery when the moment truly matters, and she will act to protect her family and friends. Having grown up in the shadow of conflict, she also has a peace-loving disposition and dislikes fighting.

Her motivations are rooted in her curiosity and her affection for those around her. She wants to understand her new home and to contribute to the life of the hotel, and she becomes part of the establishment rather than remaining a passive guest. Her arrival marks a significant turning point for the hotel, as her energy and enthusiasm bring fresh life into a quiet place that had long been waiting for visitors. Together with Yachiyo, the hotel's longtime robot attendant, she works over the course of centuries to improve the hotel, helping to add features such as a hot spring and a whisky distillery and even promoting the establishment by launching advertisements into space, all while the staff continue to await the eventual return of humanity. Her relationship with Yachiyo gradually deepens from that of guest and staff member into something closer to a student and mentor bond. Yachiyo teaches her the galactic common language, and Ponko's curiosity and openness, in turn, give Yachiyo new energy after a century of unchanging routine. Her connections with her family remain central to her, and the family members support one another as they adapt to life on an unfamiliar planet.

As a tanuki alien, Ponko belongs to a species capable of changing shape and mimicking the appearance of Earth humans. She also demonstrates a quick ability to learn, adapting rapidly to her new environment and picking up new languages and skills. Over the course of the story she takes part in increasingly ambitious activities, including operating an armored suit during excursions into space. The narrative also carries quieter hints of mystery around her, including gaps in her memory that suggest there may be more to her past than she herself remembers.
