Description
Hiyori Shiina is a student at the Advanced Nurturing High School, initially placed in Class 1-C under the volatile leadership of Kakeru Ryuen. By the second year, she remains in what is now Class 2-C, Ryuen's class, as the story progresses into the first semester. Known as a quiet and reserved girl with a mysterious aura, she is defined foremost by her deep love for literature, spending most of her free time in the school library. Her appearance matches this serene demeanor, featuring mid-back length silver hair often tied with black ribbons and light purplish eyes that convey a calm, intellectual curiosity.

At her core, Hiyori is a pacifist who genuinely dislikes conflict and wishes that students from different classes could coexist peacefully without hostility. This makes her an anomaly in a school driven by cutthroat competition and within her own class, which is notorious for its aggressive, often violent tactics. She is honest and bold with her words, offering sharp analyses without malice, which can sometimes come across as mercilessly candid. Despite being content with her solitary nature, she is not anti-social; she enjoys conversing with those who share her interests and demonstrates a caring side, often worrying about her friends' well-being and even using her own private points to compensate others for damages caused by her classmates.

Motivated primarily by the desire for a peaceful school life and to pursue her passion for reading, Hiyori initially showed little interest in class struggles. However, she is fiercely loyal to her friends and values genuine connections. Her role within Class 2-C is that of a silent but sharp intellectual. While Ryuen provides the ruthless strategy, Hiyori offers keen insight and serves as a moderating force, using her logic to restrain more impulsive classmates like Daichi Ishizaki. Ryuen recognizes her sharpness, addressing her by her first name, a sign of his respect, and when he temporarily stepped down from leadership, she was trusted to act as a co-leader of the class alongside Satoru Kaneda. Her desire for harmony often puts her at odds with the harsh realities of the school's exams, forcing her to navigate between her values and the needs of her class.

Hiyori's most defining relationship is with Kiyotaka Ayanokoji. They first connected over their mutual love for mystery novels, meeting regularly in the library as reading companions. She was one of the first students to intuitively sense the depth of Ayanokoji's hidden abilities without any concrete evidence. Their bond deepens significantly over time, moving beyond simple friendship. She develops romantic feelings for him, feeling a sense of happiness and synchrony when they are together. In turn, Ayanokoji finds a rare sense of peace and normalcy in her company, even delaying apologies to her and recognizing his time with her as genuinely happy. This connection has even led her to feel conflicted, as she becomes aware of his relationship with Karuizawa and worries about being rude to her. She is also on friendly terms with Honami Ichinose, a rival class leader, showing that her desire for friendship can transcend class warfare. Hiyori acts as a bridge and an emotional anchor for several of Ryuen's henchmen, who treat her with unusual politeness and respect.

Throughout the first year and into the second, Hiyori develops from a passive observer who was content to simply read books in isolation into a more assertive individual. She transitions from being a quiet loner to an active participant in class politics, accepting leadership responsibilities. Her friendship with Ayanokoji acts as a catalyst, encouraging her to become more proactive, such as initiating meetings and even pulling him by the arm to drag him into group plans. She learns to balance her inherent pacifism with the need to protect her class, understanding that some sacrifices, like an expulsion, might be necessary for the greater good.

In terms of notable abilities, Hiyori excels academically with an A rating in Academic Ability, placing her in the upper echelon of her year. Her true strength lies in her intellectual and intuitive capabilities, possessing a sharp mind for analysis, information gathering, and deduction. She has demonstrated the ability to piece together subtle clues to form accurate hypotheses, which is why she is trusted with reconnaissance. However, her physical abilities are extremely poor, rated an E, and she lacks cooperativeness, reflecting her preference for solitary activities over teamwork.
