Description
Light Underwood is the main protagonist of the anime Bogus Skill <<Fruitmaster>>: About That Time I Became Able to Eat Unlimited Numbers of Skill Fruits (That Kill You). He is a young man of average height with silky black hair, purple eyes, and a slim, muscular build. From childhood, his dream has been to become the greatest adventurer in history, a goal he shared with his close friend Lena Floria.
Light’s background is defined by the world’s system of Skill Fruits, where each person can consume only one fruit in a lifetime to gain a single skill; eating a second is normally fatal. When he and Lena eat their first Skill Fruits, Lena receives the legendary Sword Saint ability, but Light acquires the Fruitmaster skill, which only improves his ability to cultivate and harvest fruits. The skill is widely considered bogus and useless for combat, forcing Light to accept a life as a farmer while Lena rapidly rises as an S‑rank adventurer. Despite this setback, Light remains determined and continues practicing swordsmanship in secret.
His life changes when he accidentally consumes a second Skill Fruit, an act that should kill him. Instead, he survives and discovers the hidden power of the Fruitmaster skill: complete immunity to the lethal poison found in all Skill Fruits. This makes him the only person in the world who can eat unlimited fruits without dying, allowing him to stack an endless number of abilities. His first additional skill is Sword God, a powerful combat ability. He later acquires many others, including Magic God, and can use any object he perceives as a sword to fight.
Light is driven by two core motivations: to stand beside Lena as an equal and to prove that a supposedly weak skill can lead to greatness. He is calm under pressure, tactically minded, and naturally resilient. While initially discouraged by his skill, he never gives up and shows a strong sense of justice, especially when defending those he cares about. He publicly challenges the abusive adventurer Grouse to a duel to free Lena from a forced party, and he defeats him using only a deck brush, demonstrating both skill and resolve.
His key relationships include Lena Floria, his childhood friend who never loses faith in him. He also takes in a young orphan girl named Ayla Lawrence, who becomes a close companion and uses the Appraisal skill to understand his abilities. Later, he rescues and is joined by Sylvia, a High Elf who becomes fiercely loyal and serves as his primary magic user and strategist. Their dynamic is playful yet protective, and Sylvia often competes with Lena for Light’s attention. Light also forms bonds with other adventurers such as Aira and Sia, building the party Luxeria.
Over the course of the story, Light undergoes significant development. He transitions from a humble farmer marginalized by his weak skill to a multi‑skilled powerhouse leading a successful adventuring party. He subverts the world’s rule that limits each person to one skill, and his journey emphasizes hidden potential and the importance of perseverance. Despite his growing power, he remains humble and focused on protecting his friends and achieving his dream.
Light’s notable abilities center on his unique Fruitmaster skill. Its primary trait is poison immunity, which allows him to consume an unlimited number of Skill Fruits and gain every ability they grant. He has acquired combat skills such as Sword God, which amplifies his swordsmanship to godlike levels, and Magic God, which grants him immense magical prowess. He can also use the Fruitmaster skill for efficient farming, though this becomes secondary to his combat capabilities. His strategic mind and calm demeanor make him an effective leader in battle.
