Description
Dratena Belbury is a young girl who serves as a member of a mysterious organization known as Black Swan. Tragically marked by her unique power, her life has been shaped by profound loss and unjust persecution. Coming from a family of successful merchants, Dratena obtained her ability by consuming a Skill Fruit at the age of twelve. This event coincided with a series of calamities for her family: her mother fell ill and died, their business collapsed, and the family name fell into ruin. Her father, believing their misfortune was caused by her taboo power, accused her of being a cursed child and cruelly expelled her from the family home, forcing her to live in isolation. She was eventually taken in by a figure known as Holy Sister, who raised her and became her only trusted ally and emotional support.
In terms of personality, Dratena often presents herself as a ruthless and unyielding adversary, showing no hesitation in confronting or eliminating adventurers who get in her way while carrying out her missions. This cold exterior, however, is a direct result of the pain she suffered after being rejected by her own family and community. Having been treated as an outcast, she built a defensive wall around herself. Despite this hardened demeanor, Dratena possesses a more vulnerable and bashful side, which becomes apparent when she interacts with the adventurer Lena Floria, hinting at a genuine desire for friendship and connection. Underneath her role as an agent of a clandestine group, she still cherishes her personal passions. She has a deep love for dance, moving with a grace reminiscent of a ballet dancer, and she has long prepared to participate in a sacred traditional event known as the Fairy Dance.
Dratena’s primary role in the story is that of an antagonist who clashes with the protagonist Light Underwood and his companions. She is assigned to eliminate Light and awaits his party in the Haunted Citadel of Spirits, where she has filled a mansion with reanimated corpses of adventurers who had gone missing. During this confrontation, she reveals the depth of her strategic cunning by controlling the corpse of Count de Montez to utilize his powerful summoning abilities. However, her plans go awry when she loses control of a Wicked Dragon she summons, leading to her defeat. Following this event, Dratena returns to her hometown to finally participate in the Fairy Dance. When she is located by Light’s party, it is Lena Floria who chooses to help her escape so she can fulfill her dream of dancing in the ball. This moment is pivotal for Dratena, as she joins forces with Lena and the others to defend the city from a monster invasion, shifting from a direct foe to a temporary ally against a greater threat.
Regarding her key relationships, the most significant is her bond with Holy Sister, who rescued her from abandonment and remains the only person Dratena implicitly trusts. Her relationship with Lena Floria is also transformative; Lena shows her compassion when she is at her most desperate, and Dratena responds by showing earnest gratitude and fighting alongside her. Her connection to her biological family is defined entirely by trauma and rejection, as her father expelled her and replaced her position in the household with an adopted son.
Dratena’s character development moves from being a villain motivated by obedience to her master to an individual acting on her own desires. Initially, she is a loyal operative of Black Swan following orders to commit murder, but her personal quest to perform the Fairy Dance reveals a deeper humanity. After being aided by Lena, she willingly participates in the defense of the city, suggesting a potential path away from her life as a shadowy operative and toward redemption.
Her notable ability is a forbidden skill known as Necromancy. This power allows her to control corpses and undead monsters, effectively using magical threads to manipulate them like puppets. A critical feature of this ability is that any reanimated corpse retains the skills it possessed in life, allowing Dratena to utilize a wide variety of abilities through her undead servants. She can command multiple undead simultaneously, provided she has the mental capacity to manage them. However, this power has significant limitations. She cannot create new undead from nothing and is limited to controlling existing corpses. Furthermore, maintaining control over more powerful spirits or monsters is extremely difficult and risky, and if she attempts to control a creature beyond her limit, she can be knocked unconscious by its rampage.
