Description
Genya Shinazugawa is a Demon Slayer and the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira. He is sixteen years old and stands out among the corps because he cannot use standard Breathing Techniques, a fundamental skill for most demon slayers. Instead, he relies on a unique and dangerous ability to consume demon flesh, temporarily taking on their characteristics to fight on equal footing.

Born into a poor, ordinary family with seven children, Genya was the second son. The family suffered under an abusive father until he was stabbed to death. After that, Genya and his older brother Sanemi made a promise to protect their mother and younger siblings together. Their family was destroyed one night when their mother, who had left home and was turned into a demon, returned and attacked. The demon mother killed all of Genya's younger siblings in the attack, which also left Genya with a large, jagged scar across his face. Sanemi arrived in time to fight the demon, but a young Genya, unable to see the demon's face in the dark and in a state of shock, witnessed his brother standing over his mother's body with a sword. He mistakenly screamed that Sanemi was a murderer. Genya later learned the truth: his brother had not killed their mother, but had only wounded her; the actual cause of her death was exposure to sunlight. However, by the time he understood what had happened and wanted to apologize, Sanemi had already left.

Driven by a desire to avenge his siblings and, more importantly, to find his brother and apologize, Genya joined the Demon Slayer Corps. He survived the grueling Final Selection, which serves as the entrance exam for the corps, alongside other notable survivors including Tanjiro Kamado. However, from the very beginning, Genya has a volatile and aggressive personality. He is foul-mouthed, ill-tempered, and prefers to act as a "lone wolf," refusing help from others and showing little interest in manners or politeness. This rough exterior is a direct parallel to his older brother Sanemi and is largely a shell built from immense frustration and self-hatred. He is painfully aware of his own weakness and his inability to use standard techniques, which makes him feel inferior, especially when compared to his prodigal brother. This inferiority complex leads him to act recklessly, rushing to fight powerful demons in a desperate attempt to prove himself worthy of being a Hashira and earn Sanemi's recognition.

Because Genya cannot use Total Concentration Breathing, the Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima, took him in as a disciple. From Gyomei, Genya learned a technique called "Repetitive Action," which involves reciting a phrase or prayer to focus the mind, sharpen concentration, and minimize pain, serving as a substitute for the mental clarity other slayers gain from breathing. His primary weapons are equally unconventional. He wields a standard Nichirin blade, but his main armament is a large-caliber, double-barreled shotgun made from the same sunlight-absorbing metal as a demon slayer's sword. The shotgun's bullets are also crafted from this Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand, allowing him to injure and decapitate demons from a distance.

His most defining and unusual ability is his temporary demonic transformation. By using his abnormally strong bite and specialized digestive organs, Genya can consume the live flesh of a demon. This grants him demonic attributes for a short time, including enhanced physical strength, speed, and accelerated regeneration. The power he gains depends on the strength of the demon he consumes. During the Swordsmith Village Arc, he ate parts of Upper Rank Four, Hantengu, empowering him enough to survive grievous wounds that would instantly kill a normal person. In the final battle against Upper Rank One, Kokushibo, he consumed the demon's hair and flesh, which allowed him to reattach severed limbs and even manifest a Demon Slayer Mark, appearing as a flame-like tattoo on his forehead, which dramatically increased his abilities. Upon consuming the cells of two Upper Rank demons, Genya even developed his own Blood Demon Art. He learned to merge his demonic cells with his bullets and shotgun. These flesh bullets could be steered mid-air to home in on their target and, upon impact, would grow into wooden roots inside the demon's body, draining its blood and paralyzing it, preventing the use of its own Blood Demon Art.

Genya's primary motivation and the central conflict of his character are his relationships with other slayers. His relationship with his older brother, Sanemi, is fraught with misunderstanding and pain. When they meet again within the Demon Slayer Corps, Sanemi is extremely hostile, refusing to acknowledge Genya as his brother and even trying to cripple him to force him out of the corps. Genya believes this is because Sanemi still resents him for his childhood accusation. However, the truth is that Sanemi's cruelty is a desperate act of protection. He wants his younger brother to leave the dangerous world of demon slaying and live a safe, normal life. This truth is only revealed during their final battle together against Kokushibo, where a dying Genya finally understands and tearfully apologizes to his brother, thanking him for always protecting him.

In contrast, his relationship with Tanjiro Kamado is one of growth and friendship. They initially clash when Genya is aggressive and Tanjiro stops him. Genya finds Tanjiro's persistent kindness annoying, but during their shared battle against Hantengu, he comes to respect Tanjiro's sincere nature and fighting spirit. Tanjiro actively tries to mend the rift between Genya and Sanemi, even physically defending Genya from Sanemi's attacks. In turn, Genya, having let go of his pride, becomes a reliable ally, teaching Tanjiro the Repetitive Action technique to help him in his own training. Over time, Genya sheds his aggressive, lone-wolf persona to become more sociable and cooperative, showing a deeply kind and family-oriented nature that he had kept hidden. In the final battle within the Infinity Castle, Genya plays a crucial sacrificial role. After helping to defeat Kokushibo, he succumbs to his severe wounds. Due to his altered physiology from consuming demon flesh, his body disintegrates into dust upon death, leaving his brother Sanemi devastated and his friend Tanjiro weeping bitterly over the loss of a brave and cherished comrade.
