Description
Kokushibo is a demon affiliated with the Twelve Kizuki, holding the highest position of Upper Rank One. He serves as a major antagonist in the Infinity Castle arc, standing as the second most powerful demon after Muzan Kibutsuji. Over four centuries ago, during the Sengoku era, he was a human named Michikatsu Tsugikuni, the twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest Demon Slayer in history and the creator of Sun Breathing. While Yoriichi was a prodigy blessed with unparalleled natural talent, Michikatsu was a hardworking swordsman who trained intensely to achieve his skill. The vast difference in their abilities planted deep seeds of jealousy and resentment in him. He eventually created his own breathing style, Moon Breathing, and awakened a Demon Slayer Mark. Knowing the mark curses its bearer to die by the age of twenty-five and driven by an obsessive desire to surpass his brother, he accepted Muzan's offer to become a demon.
Kokushibo possesses a calm, reserved, and dignified demeanor, speaking with authority and strictly adhering to the hierarchy of the Twelve Kizuki. He is enigmatic and expects absolute obedience, but he rarely interacts with others beyond necessity. His primary motivation is an unrelenting thirst for power, fueled by his bitter rivalry with his twin brother. After becoming a demon, he spent centuries honing his swordsmanship so he could finally defeat Yoriichi. In their final encounter, however, Yoriichi was an elderly man. Though Kokushibo had become a demon far stronger than his human self, Yoriichi effortlessly overpowered him and landed a fatal blow, but died of old age before he could finish the act. This left Kokushibo with the hollow understanding that he would never truly surpass his brother.
In the Infinity Castle arc, Kokushibo plays a critical role as one of the final obstacles the Demon Slayer Corps must overcome. He confronts the Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito, along with the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima, and the demon slayer Genya Shinazugawa. The most significant relationship in his life is with his brother Yoriichi, whose shadow he could never escape. He also shares a tragic connection with Muichiro Tokito, whom he immediately recognizes as his direct descendant from the family he abandoned. This familial bond adds a deeply personal and sorrowful weight to their battle. He views the other Upper Moons with indifference, considering figures like Akaza to be weak and disrespectful of hierarchy, though he holds a form of respect for Muzan, viewing their arrangement as a business partnership.
Kokushibo undergoes a significant internal collapse during his final battle. Although he overwhelms the Hashira with his supreme power, their relentless assault forces him to confront the futility of his choices. When Muichiro activates a red blade and Genya uses his demonic abilities to restrain him, Kokushibo is forced into a desperate struggle. After his head is severed by Gyomei and Sanemi, he attempts to regenerate, but he catches a glimpse of his own horrifying, monstrous form reflected in a blade. Disgusted by the very power he sacrificed everything for, he is reminded of the honorable swordsman he once wished to be. In his final moment, he realizes that his brother treasured the small flute he made for him as a child, a symbol of the bond he abandoned. He disintegrates questioning his reason for existence, having achieved nothing but loneliness.
Kokushibo is exceptionally unique in that he combines demonic abilities with the swordsmanship of a Demon Slayer. He wields Moon Breathing, a style he derived from Sun Breathing. When combined with his Blood Demon Art, his attacks generate countless unpredictable crescent-shaped blades that can change size, direction, and speed. He can also manifest a powerful blade from his own flesh and blood, which can shift its shape to adapt to combat. He possesses mastery of the Transparent World, allowing him to see the biological signals and movements of his opponents to predict their actions. His regeneration is among the most powerful of any demon, capable of reconstructing even his head, though the process drives him into a less stable and more monstrous form. His centuries of experience make him an immensely cunning and nearly untouchable opponent, requiring the combined efforts of multiple Hashira and significant sacrifice to finally bring him down.
